Grand Kampar Butt Chase

The call of Raja Brooke's Birdwing, White Dragontail and Rafflesia flower was just irresistible....so decided to drag wife , daughter and Ellen along for a sneak attack on Chee Meng's home town.

Thanks to Federick, Young San , LC and Kurt's inputs and tips , the trip from 21-24th was executed flawlessly . We hit Kuala Woh within 6 hours of leaving Singapore , and the following days visited Ulu Gerok, Gua Tempurung, Lata Kinjang and Kuala Woh again on the way back.

By the fourth day Ellen was suffering from butt fatigue when I was shooting this on the opposite bank, she was sentimentally floating away her pair of faithful boots and taking her HP for a swim....... the handphone survived, while the boots must be somewhere out in Malacca straits!:bsmile:

Beautiful shot Sunny, the metallic greens on the wings are splendid. How about decreasing the contrast a bit more so we can see the details on the darker parts of the wings.

There ain't much details on the black portion of the upperwings , unless it is a worn specimen with the veins showing. The underside does show more detail,will post one later when I get home.

wow. Unker sunny you are 3 times lucky. 3 perched rajahs in 3 days. The phone is still working. Wow. I have new respect for nokia. My shoes have given me its last toil through the trails. I am glad the boots brought me up slippery banks and vertical climbs to see the white dragontail, rafflesia and rajah brooke before it bid goodbye! *sniff*

Wow, what a beautiful shot of a non-puddling RBB.

Here is another RBB on another perch..............Ellen ,there were at least 4 all perching and waiting on the opposite side of the river..... the problem was lighting and the strong breeze, this shot cost me at least 15 mossies' bites!!!

Again decided to have the flash switch-off to prevent blowing the highly reflective green. For one reason or other fill-flash did not work well in the deep shade with this butterfly.

Yes ! We managed to see the Rafflesia, though not as nice as the one you saw. This one was facing downwards. Nevertheless , we take what is a given and make the most of it.

With Ellen shouting @#%$3 every few steps and screaming Lea....ches!!! The leeches within 10 km could hear us and they were all heading our way..... plenty of them . Only casualty is my daughter who was decorated with two leeches .........she din heed my advice wearing short T , so one in front on the tummy and the other at the back !


The Trek..... Pengz! the last 100 meters was almost 70 degree incline...

I have wanted to go back to that area ever since LC took me there 2 years ago, and I now have my map out looking for a second visit. Could you PM me with details of the guest house you stayed at. What is the weather like in July?:)

The Rafflesia feel leathery on touch , the species at Ulu Gerok does not emit an offensive smell, according to our orang asli kaka , the cannon-ball-like bud takes 9 months to mature on the vine , and the flower last for just 3-4 days.

Our english educate Iban friend Andrew at the Guest house said for places like Sabah and Sarawak , people trek for days just to see this flower. At Ulu Gerok it takes just up to 2 hours to reach the site.

Ha i left quite an impression at rumah rehat Adeline:D by popping up more than 12 hours ahead of schedule without prior warning :D. But how was I to know there was no guest house in Gopeng and that the nearest ones were in Ipoh? They had to put me up at the guest house across LOL.

My lunch was bigger:D..I told Adeline i was starving :D.....but no durian :(..i must go back again now that it's durian season:D

I was not so lucky in my previous trip staying in Adeline's place. I had rashes all over my body. Not Malaria and not Dengue fever, Doc said it was virus infection. A friend told me it was mite bites. If you have noticed, the root of the chalet is made of Atap. where there is a certain kind of mite lives in there. Not only me, but they were other visitors got the mite bite too. According to Malay or Orang Asli, it could also be "Lemah Semangat". :bsmile:

Until now, I have no idea what it was, Virus or mite bite or Lemah Semangat.

When are you gonna go back there again ?

I didn't get any rashes from the Gopeng trip. But got a minor one from the ER trip though...not serious...disappeared after a few days.

No plan to go back again this year..maybe next year:D

The rash from E.R. is "Yiming" rash. His eczema was infectious and got me too! O_O

LC,

The aircon villas with attached bathroom are ready to be launched next month. We have a tour of it and it was very impressive..... would set you back RM$188 per person per day inclusive of all meals.

May be Ellen has some photos on the villas?

Yes , the White Dragontails are from Gua Tempurung , we arrived there in the late afternoon after the Rafflesia trek and din see a single one!! We were back there early the next day and they came down as advised by LC on the magical hour. There must be at least 10 of them around by the time we have our fill. Even behind the toilets there were a few of them puddling in the drain.

Sunny, i saw the villa...i showered there LOL. The ones at the guest house were full and out of water because too many people were using it all at once. Adeline then asked one of her staff to bring me to the villa for a shower:D

I found the dragontail at around 3pm i think. Yes, near the drain:D
