Jamides celeno aelianus Common Caerulean Venus 080214 by Ben Ee, on Flickr
Yes, it is Jamides celeno.
The celeno subgroup is recognised by the unbroken straight FW postdiscal band.
J. malaccanus have the three main HW bands complete. In J. celeno & pura they are incomplete.
J. celeno is relatively very common.
The male upperside is very pale whitish blue with a black border of the FW outer margin (termen).
The upperside HW margin is also darker as can be seen here.
J. pura is a brighter blue to the margin (ie without a black border), a definitive ID.
Recorded in the past, its existence now in Singapore remains unproven.

Hi,
Thanks Dr Seow. Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Harmonious HORSE Year.
Ee TH
Here is the one to look out for in Singapore.
Jamides pura pura . This male is from India.
Note the upperside blue reaches right to the margins.
The underside is practically identical with J. celeno.

A male J. celeno aelianus showing a similar bit of the upperside. Cameron Highland, Malaya.

Yup, Lampides boeticus.
2 is Pelopidas mathias.
There is some grey shading on the underside.
The Conjoined Swift is deeper brown , the upperside spots very yellow, the 2 cellspots tend to be elongate.

Rapala pheretima is right.
Note ther is an extra spot/bar in the FW cell (innermost).
This is sometimes missing.
A 2nd good clue is that the HW black spot always lack the orange ring.

Thanks Dr Seow

Hi,
Caltoris philippina philippina ??
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3694/...ef6d79d96f.jpg
Caltoris philippina philippina Seletar by Ben Ee, on Flickr
Thanks for advice.
Ben Ee
It is a Caltoris malaya female.
There is a faint FW upper cellspot.
Two species here in which there is no FW cellspot.(The faint one here can be discounted.(occassional in C. malaya.)
In C. philippina the FW is sharper & excavated (ie indented/ cut in) on the lower termen(outer margin).
Caltoris malaya is probably not rare, just that it is rather difficult to ID with confidence from the underside alone.
The extra spot in space 1b (lowermost) indicates a female.
TL Seow:cheers:
Hi Dr Seow,
Thanks for quick reply, still cannot get the IDs right yet. Always something new to learn.
Ben Ee
Thanks Dr Seow,
C malaya still not yet in S'pore Checklist.
Ben Ee
Not officially in, but the species had been bred in the past by both Horace & Ben Jin.
eg. (size of spots varies.)
http://www.butterflycircle.com/showt...-of-2-Caltoris
The Pelopidas Group of Skippers are all very similar on the upperside as well, so it is a good idea to get a shot of the underside HW.
However, Borbo cinnara is browner & spots 2 & 3 are rather irregular.
Parnara lack spot 1b in both sexes, & Polytremis & Pelopidas have cellspots.
TL Seow:cheers:
Hi Dr Seow,
thanks for info, will try for all sides next time.

Hi,
where to locate the scent fold for Common Bluebottle to id male/female ??
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/98297153@N08/13797014794" title="Graphium sarpedon luctatius Common Bluebottle Seletar BG 120414 by Ben Ee, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/13797014794_45c8078820.jpg" width="500" height="458" alt="Graphium sarpedon luctatius Common Bluebottle Seletar BG 120414"></a>
Ee
The scent folds can only be seen on the upperside & that in a set specimen eg.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b6TKYg69kv.../photo+1_1.JPG
From the underside it is quite difficult.
In the male the band is bluer, & the outer margin of the HW's uppermost big window is usually indented or concave.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5kk2ltkkoT...luebottles.jpg
In the female the band is more strongly yellow-tinged, & the outer margin of the HW upermost big window is often slightly convex.

Hi Dr Seow,
Thanks for advice. Will need to get a copy of Butterflies of Thailand.
I got 52 species from my 3 days here. Will post when I get back tomorrow.
Thanks
Ben Ee
The Papilio memnon agenor f. alcanor is interesting. According to Pinratana, this form is similar to f. distantianus, but "the white area is restricted and not, or only just, entering into the cell". Ek-Amnuay does not provide a description, but shows a specimen with hardly any white at all, only 4 small oblong spots. The photo here shows the opposite, with considerably more extensive white than f. distantanius.
Finding a female Artipe eryx with intact tails is something worth celebrating:)
You are right here. JN Eliot states the same.
I merely assumed it is alcanor because the white is extensive below the cell & the pix below labelled f-alcanor..
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-6162...-the-back.html
The 2nd pair in this HK series should be f-alcanor.
http://www.ccs-hk.org/DM/butterfly/P...io-memnon.html
Not sure what this form with extensive white is called.
