Male Euploea modesta modesta.


Several species can be confusing in fieldshots.
they varies widely in different regions so comparing shots from different countries can be bewildering.

Euploea algea.
UpF appearing blue-black with a dark blue sheen
Male brand very long & broad.
FW apex more rounded in the male.
HW submarginal spots more elongate ,reaching 4X the marginal spots.

The next two species can look almost identical from the underside alone.


Euploea modesta modesta.

UpF with the basal 2/3 deep dark blue.
Male with the FW tornus excavated (cut in) Diagnostic, but visible only in sharp focus.
HW more triangular, ie sharper at the apex.
Male without a brand.
Smaller than E. midamus.

Euploea midamus chloe.

UpF with only the basal area with a dark blue sheen. more often with some discal spots.
HW more rounded, submarginal spots relatively rounded.
Larger than E. modesta.
Male with a narrow moderate brand.

Lighter much paler.
FW apex vein 9 arising from vein 7 relatively long.( No vein 8.)

Saletara panda.
Male with sharper FW.
FW vein 9 which arise from vein 7 very short. (No vein 8.)
Vein 9 is usually absent in the female.

Telicota besta bina.

At first glance just from the underside alone this suggest Telicota bambusae.
The veins on the HW band appear vague or not dark-dusted. This feature is variable & difficult to judge in fieldshots.

The 2nd pic shows the base of space 2 is fully orange.

The species which have space 2 base with consistently with an orange patch are T. colon, besta & augias.
In the other species FW space 2 base is black.
However some examples may have traces of orange especially in T. bambusae.

of the 3 species,
T. augias is deeply orange.

T. colon have the FW spots staggered out& may be distorted.

This leaves Telicota besta bina.
FW with the base of space 2 with an orange patch.
Male brand slightly arcuate, placed against the inner margin of the black space.
UnH veins across band may be lightly dark-dusted & often raised.

Likely Jamides celeno.

It is too difficult to separate J. pura from J. celeno just from the underside.
The difference mentioned in the past are also not consistent.
However J. pura have straighter FWs.

Male UpF spot 2 & 3 narrow & rectangular.
A line through the two cellspots usually missed the brand.
UnH not grey-tinged having a clean uniform brown colour.

A line through the two cellspots always cut the brand.
Underside tinged grey creating an uneven shadings & a dirty look.
