Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park

Dear All,

I went to Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia last February.
It was very nice, I shot plenty of butterflies. Here are some of them,
and please help me identified them. I'm not good in identifying anything even
faces!

Hello Martin,

I am a novice but I did a search for matches in The Butterflies of the Malay Peninsula and Khew's beautiful Field Guide to the Butterflies of Singapore. The photo checklist (http://www.butterflycircle.com/check...page/startpage), LC Goh's site (http://www.pbase.com/lcgoh/my_butter...lidae&page=all) and the butterflies of Koh Samui (http://www.delias-butterflies.co.uk/...bsiteindex.htm) are also superb resources for identification.

BBS#1 -- a lovely looking satyrinae. I think that it would be in the genus Ragadia, and is possibly R. makuta.

BBS#2 -- one of the awlets. In Khew's guide, there are two species that resemble your photo. These include the Great Orange Awlet (Burara etelka) and the Orange Awlet (B. harisa). The latter is much smaller than the former. When looking in the photo checklist, it seems to more closely resemble the Great Orange Awlet but I am not certain.

BBS#3, 7 and 10 -- All Mycalesis but I don't know know the species.

BBS#13 -- I can't see the upperside of the lower wings very well but it looks like a Black-veined Tiger (Danaus melanippus) to me. I suppose Common Tiger (D. genutia) is also possible.

BBS#16 -- I think maybe Blue Glassy Tiger (Ideopsis vulgaris).

BBS#17 -- Common Three Ring (Ypthima pandocus)?

BBS#18 -- another Ypthima. In Khew's book, there are three that look much like this. It seems that they are separated in part by the size of the first pair of rings on the lower wing and whether or not they are contiguous.

BBS#26 -- Common Tree Nymph (Idea stolli). Really an incredible butterly especially in flight.

BBS#21 -- One of the Thaumantis, maybe Dark Blue Jungle Glory (T. klugius)

BBS#22 -- sure looks like the illustration of the Red Malay Harlequin(Paralaxita damajanti) in BMP. Whatever it is, it is beautiful

BBS#24 -- one of the map butterflies, maybe Cyrestis nivea

I hope that the others fill in the holes or correct my incorrect guesses.


I had a look on the net of the park. It seems to be an interesting place. How did you go with other animals (mammals, birds, reptiles)? If you took habitat shots, I would enjoy seeing some of these as well.

You are right, that looks like a Paralaxita damajanti damajanti (The Malay Red Harlequin)

The three look-alike Red Harlequins are in this thread.

You appear to have had a good fruitful trip. I particularly like No.3, as I have not seen this species on any of my travels before, nor I think, has it been posted on this site before.

David has most correct.
2) Burara etelka was my thought as well, though as I did not see the specimen to ascertain size, and I can not see forewing veins 10 or 11 clearly, I can not be absolutely certain.
3) Mycalesis maianeas
8) Pyroneura species - this is as far as I am prepared to go on this one, sorry.
10) Mycalesis fusca (I think)
13) is Danaus melanippus.
20) Xanthotaenia busiris
21) Thaumantis odana (not klugius)

Please note that I can only go to species level, I do not know what subspecies are in Sumatra.

I think that leaves 6, 7, 14 & 15. I do not wish to hazard guesses with these, sorry again!

14 probably Pelopidas assamensis. ( hindwing spotting variable- full to none ; note dark colour & white hyaline spots .)
15 probably Jamides abdul. (note sharp forewing ; hindwing large high-set submarginal spot in space 6.) Check

My God, You guys are the best. Thanks a million for helping me identified them and also some cool links to ID them.

And David, on the two days visit i mainly focus on butterfly, while trekking we also saw other animals, birds, lizards,
monkeys and also we came across elephant foot prints criss crossing our track.

I will post some habitat photos later.
