Some of you may have seen the draft copy of the cover of the Field Guide to the Butterflies of Singapore book that we are working on, and which many of you are contributors of photographs.

The reason why I had selected that species was because it held some special 'meaning' for Singapore. :)

It also set me thinking whether, amongst all the butterfly species in Singapore, which one would you name as the National Butterfly of Singapore, and why?

Give your suggestions here.

Note : We have a National Flower - the orchid Vanda Miss Joaquim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanda_Miss_Joaquim)

Interesting. From what I recall, only one butterfly species carry the name Singapura? :)

Perhaps, my vote go to the (Ubin) Knight.

I'd say Pygmy posie.:)

It has orange parts (close to the red of our flag), irregular white makings
(like the cresent and stars ), and it is a little red dot.
It is also fearless of drinking sap with other larger butts, representing
S'pore sharing with the larger countries, yet unafraid of them.

Abisara sunny singapura :gbounce:
Yes, we want sunny Singapura on weekends.

Ok, my choice is Lime Butterfly - everyone can spot one easily and it is elegant.

My vote goes to Five Bar Swordtail.
It's one of the prettiest butterfly i have ever seen and was just trying to see what elements that it has in order to qualify for Singapore Butterfly.
Perhaps the Five Bar could stand for the nation's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
The Sword is symbolic of liberty and strength.

Paint Jezebel - beautiful and not rare.

Thank you. It would be an honour to be named as your National Butt!

Actually, there is, I think, only one species, not subspecies, with the name 'singapura' in it, and that is Delias singapura. Unfortunately, it has not been found for many, many years. I know that C&P4 states that Wallace probably had the location wrong for the Holotype, but as he gave Mt. Ophir (Gunung Ledang) for the location of Delias georgina ( now renamed D. orphne), I can not see how he would have made that mistake.
