View Full Version : Guide to the Butterflies of Singapore

As some of you may already be aware, we are working on a new book, tentatively titled "Guide to the Butterflies of Singapore". The book is expected to feature almost all the successfully recorded and confirmed species of butterflies in Singapore, currently hovering around the 290 species mark, if we can get some of our recent re-discoveries confirmed by various experts.

Each species will be featured on one page of the book, with a primary photo of the species and up to 4 secondary photos. The publisher's layout artist will be giving me a sample page shortly and I'll post it when I get it.

I will be asking Sunny and Anthony to help me collect the photos from as many of you as possible, to be featured in the book. I'll be doing most of the writing, which should be kept to a minimum, as the book intends to portray photos of the species to help the buyers to ID Singapore butterflies.

For those of you submitting your photos, please use the following format when making your submissions :

300 dpi resolution
2000 pixels at the widest end. The book is 12.5cm (about 5") wide.
If your shot is in portrait orientation, use 2000 pixels for the height.
Those using CS2 or CS3, please save your shots under CMYK and TIFF. Do not sharpen your shots, as this may cause some pixellation in the printing. However, you may adjust the colours and contrast to your preference as seen on your screen (preferably calibrated)
The resolution should allow us to crop a bit where necessary, so please do not overcrop your shots until the butt is too tight in the frame.

We will be looking for shots featuring, upper/undersides, male/females, forms, unique poses etc to show as many of BC members' shots as possible.

All contributors will get a free copy of the book. :) The book is sponsored. But to make it available to the general public, we intend selling a limited number of copies at S$25.

So please dig out your best shots and standby to email them to Sunny, Anthony or me. Note that the copyright and IP of the photos belongs to the photographer(s) and will only be used for the book.

im not sure about prints. Anyways. if the images are less than 2000px, is it ok to enlarge it to 2000px?

Another question will be is it ok to convery a jpeg to CMYK?
just wondering abt the limitations..

If you need to enlarge it, chances are that the quality will not be as good. I believe Simon has some software which can interpolate the pixels when making the output larger than the actual size of the picture.

From what I've been told, the colour correction when using JPG requires a lot more work. Hence even if a JPG file is converted to TIFF, in extreme cases, the colour will be inaccurate when printed. That's why many of us shoot in RAW. This is for the day when we want to see our works in print and on large formats. :)

I'm using 2000 pixels as a rough guide, since we may have to crop the pic abit for the book.

Otherwise, the calculations were based on 300dpi, and 5" wide - which would theoretically make the shot just nice at 1500 pixels wide.

Just 1 keeper shot would do. No need to keep large files around unless you have 4Tb of hard disk like Simon. ;P

Anthony,

Tif format in PS is good enough....dun need CMYK.

Why dunch you make life simpler for yourself from now on ....

Default your raw converter to 300 dpi on 16 bits ...... and include a step in your workflow to save your processed shot into tif format at 8 bits before saving it to Jpg for resizing for the web.

It does not really take up that much space if you save it in 8 bits, of course if HD space is not an issue and you are kiasu, then by all means save it in 16 bits (double the size ) .;P

It is those unwanted shots in raw that are taking up all the space , normally I deleted the whole dejected lot after I creamed off those I want from a day's load.

Hello everyone, as khew mentioned we are collecting pictures for the book. ive created a ftp for all of you to upload your pictures.

you can create a folder and start dumping your photos inside.
Just to keep things simple. please follow the naming convention.
1) Foldername = yourname/nick
2) filename = butterflyname - yourname
3) you may put your different butts into diff folders

here is how you log in...

1. you can just launch this from any file browser or IE explorer
10456

2. key in "ftp://butterflycircle.com" in the address bar
10457

3. some error msg will come out, just press ok
10458

4. right click and click "login as"
10459

5. username = buttpic@butterflycircle.com password = helloworld
10460

just drop me a message if you guys run into any trouble. Free book by uncle Khew hor! hard to miss out on the offer :what:

Hang on... I'll need to give you guys a proper filename protocol, otherwise the shots will get jumbled up and you may be wrongly credited in the book.

The publisher's layout artist suggested something. I left it at home. Will update on this thread.

In their last experience in the Mammals of Singapore book, it was a nightmare sorting out all the photos, scientific names/labels and the authors' names cos each file was named differently.

Administrative Arrangement for Photo Selection and Submission

To facilitate the ease of submission and management of pictures the following are the arrangement:

1. Naming convention: Use the checklist in the posts before this in naming your pictures. ie say if Horace has a shot of the Pratapa deva relata (White Royal) , the file name will be :

Species number+ Scinetific Name (common name)+Photog's Name

197 Pratapa deva relata (white Royal ) Horace Tan

(Please note the numbering of species for this book is slightly different from the Forum's Photo Checklist.)

2. Upload to Photobucket: Open a new Photobucket account and upload your web size shots and provide the link here( and password if require) for khew to access and view the shots. For example :

http://s498.photobucket.com/albums/rr349/ChirSunny/

Guest Password : butterflies ( if you have designated it private)

(Do note most photo hosting sites accept only Jpeg file and NOT Tif file)

3. Submission of Full Resolution Files: You will receive a PM on the shots that are tentatively picked and to proceed to burn the selected shots' full resolution file on a CD/DVD for onward transmission to Khew

The file resolution and size requirement are as follow :

Resolution : 300PPI

Size : Long side 2000 pixels on 6x4 for lanscape or 5x4 in portrait

File format : Tif file in CMYK color mode

Cut off Date : 30th Nov 2008

The earlier you do the above the smoother will be the process.

Thank You in anticipation!

I have upper and underside shots, but they are shot in JPEG. Also, I do not know if they will be good enough (have 'messy' backgrounds, as is my preference!).

Thanks for the offer, Les. At this moment, the more the merrier. It's more of people being rather 'shy' about submitting their works, rather than submitting too many that we are concerned with at the moment.

In fact, I'm already "reserving" your female Courtesan shots. :)

All : Do something like Sunny has done in his 'album' and I'll go in and seek out the photos that I need. What I'm doing, is to look at the book from an overview on the quality and diversity. Don't worry if e.g. some shots have black backgrounds. I am taking in the general picture of how the book would look like and also vary the types of photos. (The book will be very boring if all the photos have the butts perched on a flower with a totally green background for all 280 species that we are featuring!)

Thanks, Sunny. Quite a lot of usable shots in there...

Just giving a quick scan thru' there are a couple of mis-labelled species. 131-3 and 208-6 are mis-labelled.

Anyone has good shots of the male Common Birdwing?

I believe that Terry has a mating pair :D

Thanks for pointing out the mislabelling

131-3 should be 220-3 Rapala iarbus iarbus (Common Red Flash)

208-6 should be 198 Tajuria cippus maxentius (Peacock Royal)

I've been working on the species section of the book, and will probably clear my leave in early Dec to finalise the write ups for the first section of the book.

For the species section, it will contain at least 280 species (just to get a nice number) but may go higher if we have good photos. Priority will be given to those species which are definitely seen in Singapore over the past 5 years, and will include those which are migratory or likely to have gone extinct since they were last seen.

In my hard disk, each species is designated a folder, into which I will put in the descriptive write up, key details box, one primary photo which will be the full width of the page (if landscape) and up to 4 secondary photos (which may be cropped to square format, depending on the design of each page)

I will be emailing each individual photographer for your photos, which I feel would be suitable for the book, starting with the Papilionidae and Pieridae families, for which I've completed the write ups. Once completed, I will progressively hand the folders to the layout artist, and then move on to the other families.

Once I email you, please revert with your photos in the format and resolution as earlier mentioned in this thread. If you do not revert in about a week, I will source for other photographers' work.

If you think you have photos which are suitable for the book, you are also welcomed to put them on one of the online websites and let me know the URLs.

Please do not sharpen or over-crop your shots. Leave it to the publisher to standardise the sharpening. Some shots may have to be cropped, and if you leave too little space around the butt, we may have to drop the shot if it is not usable.

Count down to cut-off-date for photo submission:

21 more days to go to 30th November

If you dun process you shot now , it is unlikely that you are ever going to do it

...in any case 3 months was given.

Papilionidae : Photos still needed

Tailed Jay - good open wing shot. I recall either LC or Horace has one?
Common Birdwing - another good open wing shot. Male or Female also can.
Lime Butterfly - open wing shot. Ben Jin can you process the one in our blog article? The one perched on a fern.
Pieridae/Coliadinae : Photos still needed

Lemon Emigrant - anyone has an open winged shot? Male or Female also can.
Orange Emigrant - open wing shot?

Khew, If it fits your requirements. http://butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7744

Thanks. Good possibility. I'll also wait for LC's shot and see which one would better fit the book's pages.

What I'm trying to do is to mix "studio-like" shots with environmental shots. If all the pics feature butts with totally clean backgrounds, the book will be very boring. Also, it depends on which pages are the species on, and what's on the facing page, and next page. Not as easy as just collecting the shots and pasting them into the text.
