The pair of rings at the tornus of the hindwing is counted as one. The total number of the rings counted thus give this species its common name.

Why is it so?

Which species are you talking about?? Give scientific name.

In any case, all the species in the genus Ypthima are called Common N-Ring. Note singular in the ring and not rings. ;P

If you are referring to the species with 6 rings. It does not have a common name in C&P4, and futhermore, it's not common.

More explicit explainations on the counting of eye-spots by Steven Neo:

The three Ypthma species are differentiated by the number of eye-spots on the underside of the hindwing.

The two spots at he hindwing tornus , encircled by a single outer ring , are counted as only one eye-spot.
