I am delighted to post, what I believe are the first photographs EVER of a live specimen of the recently described Atrophaneura adamsoni takakoae.:redbounce

I also attach two new photos of Papilio palinurus palinurus, and one each of Cethosia cyane euanthes (common, I know, but it is one of my better efforts!) and Euploea sylvester harrisii, which is a new species for my list!:gbounce:

Overall, not a bad day, today, despite it being overcast.

More than welcome to try, however, the female has not yet been described, although I MUST have seen one today, I saw 5 flying about, but the sexes are very similar, if the nominate ssp is anything to go by!

Thanks, Bobby. Actually, the background was unavoidable, as there was nothing close behind the butt. I prefer to have a 'messy' background, rather than 'clean', as it gives a sense of place, which, to me, is just as important as the butterfly. I think this makes me a minority of one.:bsmile:

I did not post those photos of the set specimen here, because they were..... well, set! However, since my comments on the insect.net site, I am delighted to say that I have found a colony (seen 7 or 8 specimens on differing days, male & female) of the species away from Hin Lad Waterfall, and that is where I managed to take the photos shown here. I have since seen quite a few specimens so there is hope that it is expanding its range on the island. Unfortunatley, this new location is set for development!!!:cry: :mad2:

For those of you who read the insect.net comments, you may see that I have given a guarded reply about the third ssp. I strongly suspect that this is just a synonym of the takakoae ssp., but as I have not seen a specimen, or seen the paper in which it was published, I can not say for sure, but the Island on which it was found is too close, for me.

Thank you. As far as Sabah is concerned, no chance! It is only known from Nakhon Si Thammarat (1972 only) and more recently Koh Samui. Possibly my neighbouring island of Ko Phangan as well.

I, also, have the intention of visiting Sabah in the next couple of years.

I have my 1, and that suffices for me, and also for the people who regulate the checklists.. Rest assured, that I will NOT be catching any more, I don't like doing that in the first place, but scientifically, I have to have a specimen for inspection if I am to provide a paper providing the defintive checklist for Samui, which, as you know, is the main purpose of my retirement!

Hi there Jean-Marc, give my regards to Olivier please.

I, personally, have considerable doubts as to whether these specimens from Koh Chang are, in fact, A. a. takakoae. I have seen a couple of other photos from there, and they all show considerably greater white discal markings on the hindwings than in the type specimens from Samui. All the Samui specimens I have come across show the reduced markings.

Adam Cotton, who resides in Chang Mai is a Papilionid specialist, and I have promissed him a couple of specimens from Samui so he can check the validity of the subspecies. It would be very useful if he could also get specimens from Koh Chang to verify which ssp. it is. I have photos of the set specimen from Samui, I will email them to you for comparison.

Sorry I can not give you a definitive answer, but matters are still somewhat up in the air at the moment.

Unfortunately, regarding the female with hindwings almost completly white (upper side), I got only pictures and I did not caught the animal. :cry:
