I suspected that all the photos in our checklist for Ypthima baldus (http://www.b-pals.com/butts/spc_photo.php?spc_id=58&img_list_id=20) are actually Ypthima horsfieldii (http://www.b-pals.com/butts/spc_photo.php?spc_id=59&img_list_id=180).

Key for separation from C&P4 for Y. baldus: Underside hindwing ocelli in spaces 2 & 3 large and almost always contiguous; ocellus in space 5 always larger than that in space 6.

The part that C&P4 states that "the hindwing ocelli in spaces 2 and 3 large and almost always contiguous" seems to be not often the case. Most of the specimens that we see here have their ocelli in spaces 2 and 3 separate. But I don't think that they're necessarily Y. horsfieldii

In a mating pair which I posted here (http://b-pals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3400&) some time back, two very varying characteristics of the ocelli is shown in the male and female.

I'd say that the other characteristic which says that Y. horsfieldii's ocelli in space 5 is same size or smaller than the one in space 6 may be a more reliable distinguishing factor.

hmm, since the host plant is just grass, may be can try out mass breeding to figure out the diff in term of ocelli in all the babies...

Wat abt the bands? The Y. horsefieldi photos show different banding.
