As many of you will be aware, I am currently undertaking a survey of the butts of Koh Samui. Since my arrival on the island, 6 months ago, I have found 271 species to date.

As a change from the normal, I have decided to run a competition, open to all members to guess how many species I will have found on my first anniversary (2 March 2008). The winner will receive a large bottle of their favourite tipple, or something of commensurate value for those under the legal age. In view of the comments below, I will have a copy of Ek-Amnuay's book as an alternative prize. The winner will be presented their prize when I visit Singapore next year.

To give you some sort of idea, I believe that there is probably somewhere between 350 and 400 species here. Obviously, it is highly unlikely that I will have discovered them all. Also, the number will only apply to those species I have seen personally, and not those for which I have reliable documentary evidence, but not seen. I will be adding those to the total after the end of the competition. Only one entry per person will be allowed, and entries must be in before the end of September. Please PM me with your suggestions, so as not to give a guide to anyone else!.

The decision of the adjudicator (me!), will be final. In the event of a tie, it will get expensive for me!

Species totals will continue to be shown at the end of each of my posts.

Good luck.

Looks like there's a lot of interest in the book. I'll start another thread elsewhere and let's see if Les is willing to help us organise a MO (mass order) from Thailand for the members here. In a group order like this, the shipment cost is shared and hence the overall price for shipping the book over will be lower.

Just to remind everyone that the closing date for the competition is 30 September. Only had one reply so far. Please PM me with your entry. If I do not get many more entries, I will have to cancel. The prize, as many people now have the book, will be of your choice up to a similar value.

Don't worry SC, I'm not missing them. I'm just at home amongst a different forest. (I'm night blind, so can not drive after it starts getting dark, so must be home early! If I go to my waterfall, I would not be back home in time!)

Two months to go, so here is an update.

The entries ranged from 280 to 333, so those of you who were rather pessimistic are now out of the running, sorry.

The total as at 28 December is 294. Two new species added yesterday, Arhopala aida, and .......:redbounce Liphyra brassolis brassolis (The Moth Butterfly):redbounce , a species which I never expected to encounter here.

OK, competition has now finished. 1 year on Samui and I have found........

The suggestions ranged from 288 to 333. For those of you at the lower end, shame on you (you know who you are!)! For those at the higher end, I greatly appreciate the faith that you placed on me. I am sorry that I failed to live up to expectations!:bsmile:

....... The final result is 310.

And the winner is ..... Aaron who guessed 313.

Thank you everyone who entered.
