Got these pix fm my hubby who received them fm his colleagues.. one of those fwd: emails...... what is this? Transparent wings, but strange-looking body!

Butterfly, transparent bcoz no scale on the wings ;-)

It's a butterfly all right. :) I think it's called a Glasswing/Clearwing Butterfly (http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Europe/Germany/photo22607.htm)(Greta oto). Family : Nymphalidae Subfamily : Ithomiinae, found mainly in South America. It's bred in Butterfly Houses and is quite often photographed. Nice butt!

This species is "Glass Wing Butterfly". Its scientific name is "Greta oto".

Many insects use visual deception to elude predators. Transparent, red-tipped wings give a fluttering glass-wing butterfly (Cithaerias menander) the appearance of a flying red bug. But upon alighting, it seems to disappear.
