Hi all,

Please help me ID these:

This butterfly was so fast that it beat my shutter every time I attempted to shoot it. It hop off the exact moment my flash fired.

Hi Tang

The butterfly looks a lot like the skipper Yellow-venied Lancer (Pyroneura latoia latoia ).

Not so sure about the moth cats though.....

Cheers

Both are moth caterpillars. The 1st pair belongs to the hawk moth family.

The 2nd cat will sting so be careful. This family of cats looks like Lycaenidae caterpillars but they are actually moth caterpillar. They have sharp spines which can give a nasty sting and they are call the stinging nettle caterpillar.

I have seen the cats but have never bred them. Would appreciate it if you can post a pic of the moth after they emerged.

Thank you all for your help.

The caterpillars are now with my colleague. I'll ask her to take pictures of the moth after they have emerged.

Has the moth cat with the spines hatched into an adult yet? Thanks.

We didn't keep the moth cat with the spines because we were not sure of its food plant. The cat was found crawling on a wall. We released it onto a nearby plant and hoped it could return to its food plant.

One question:
I recently kept two Lime butterfly cats and both of them emerged before dawn and I missed the moment they emerged on both occasions.:-(

Do most butterflies emerge from pupa before dawn?

Thanks.

Yes Tang, they normally hatch around 4:30am to 6:30am but again depends on many many other factors.

Based on my limited experience, I encoutered some hatched in the evening, afternnon, midnight, dawn,....etc Especially the Autumn Leaf I kept, one hatches during dawn hour and the other one hacthed in the evening around 3pm+... What do you think? hahaha
