I can't distinguish besta and augias apart from their subtle colour differences. Help please. :)

Yes it is Telicota besta bina male.
The 2nd pix shows an orange patch at the base of space 2. This seen only in T. colon, besta & augias.

The Telicota species can be very confusing in field shots & many errors & doubts still exist because the upperside is rarely taken
When there is an upperside shot, the accompanying underside shot is not present.

Telicota besta bina. Typically yellower with uneven shading , ;face & chest paler. HW veins across band often lightly dark-dusted ,variable & difficult to judge sometimes.
Upperside with an orange patch at base of space 2 & brand slightly curved & nearer the inner margin of black space.

Telicota augias: Uniformly deep orange ,wings, thorax & abdomen, only the face slightly paler. HW veins across band not dark-dusted.
Upperside with an orange patch at base of space 2 (as in besta);brand broad & straight about equal distance from both margins.

T. besta & augias with upperside confirmation for comparison.
Note the difference in colouration & general appearance.

T. besta.

Thanks for the confirmation. That was what i suspected as well but the problem was i had many shots under slightly different lighting so the intensity of orange became difficult to judge. :bsmile:

Dr Seow, i believe this must be T. augias then. It was very vibrant orange and less dirty orange than besta. Found this at the same spot as the besta

It is still Telicota besta.

Telicota augias is quite bright orange with the HW veins across the veins not dark-dusted or noticiable.
Another useful pointer is the thoracic hairs are bright orange .
In T. besta the thoracic hairs are usually duller& a darker contrast with the wing colour.(some variations here)
T. augias.

What about this one? The veins don't seem very dark dusted. Still besta?

It is hard to be sure ,but I think it is probably T. besta.

Have a look at Yutaka's website. After more than a decade of collecting in Thailand he state the records in Thailand of T. augias are doubtful.
See under note in the webpage on T. augias.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/hes/92910001.html

What this meant is that T. augias is very rare & all previous records in Thailand are probably T. besta.

TL Seow;Cheers.
PS Correct examples of T. augias seem always to have FW spot 4 & 3 widely overlapping on the underside.
