I was using your guide posted on 19 July 2017 and found the Amathusia to be still challenging to ID! This specimen has the forewing main patch slightly notched at the top; hindwing fourth band appears slightly notched and broader at the top. Still Amathusia phidippus?

The Amathusia are very confusing based on the underside alone.

IN Malaya & Singapore A. phidippus has the HW 4th pale band not notched & flared at the costa.
The general ground colour is rather dull although highly variable.

Up north in Thailand forms with a semi-detached head appeared.

Although the the colour is rather reddish & suggest A. binghami the 4th band is barely notched.

Examples of A. binghami.
Upperside with dark orange markings & orange marginal band on HW.
HW 4th band strongly notched . strong redbrown tone.

A. federici. Up with orange brown markings; Un. duller brown HW 4th band typically narrow & notched. form utana very dark Up.
The hostplant Palmoil is widely cultivated, so it is surprising this is not often shot.
Probably form utana.

This is probably just a female A. phidippus although it looks reddish.
Try to get a bit of the upperside FW .

TL Seow: Cheers.

Thanks, Dr Seow! The lady wasn’t obliging enough to open her wings! Will try in future!
