Have been going through my Appias images from Chiang Mai and have a problem with these two.

The first image was taken at Doi Inthanon and I think is Banded Puffin A. pandione based on the dark smudge of the leading edge of the forewing.

I think the second image is Spot Puffin A. lalage, based on the protruding apex of the forewing and less smudging on the leading edge. Comments please on this identification gratefully received.
Many thanks.

Both are Appias pandione.

Appias pandione, widespread from India to Australia, is very variable & confusing.
The more angular apex & HW smudging indicate dsf.

Luckily you have the FW raised enough to show the spots.
The smudge near the leading edge is variable, being developed jnto a bar in some males & females.

The main clue is that the 2nd spot (in space 2 & roughly rectangular ) is large & more or less connected to the black crossband & marginal spot in space 1b.

In Appias lalage male this spot is small & well separated.
The female A. lalage in contrast is more heavily marked than the female of A. pandione; the black crossband is wider & the marginal spot 1b extends down to the lower margin.

Yes, it is certainly confusing!
Thanks for the clear explanation.
