Koruthaialos rubecula cachara. 1, 2, females. 3 , male.

There is only one speies in Bangladesh and this has been much confused with K. butleri on the net.
There are two forms, a normal & a dark form.

Koruthaialos butleri is not recorded in Bangladesh .
1 . It is totally brown above .
2 . The palpi 3rd segment are short & stout.
3 . On the underside there is aq pale area on lower part of the FW.

K. rubecula cachara.
1. Normal form with orange band. Dark form may have a narrow band.
2. Palpi 3rd segment (sticking out in front of head) long & thinner.
3 .Underside FW without a pale area.

This old illustration from Lepidoptera Indica shows K. rubecula cachara.
The FW has a narrow orange band.
The underside FW has no pale area.
The palpi 3rd segment is long & thin.

TL Seow : Cheers.
PS. Note the 3 species are best ID'ed by the shape of the 3rd segment of the palpus (plural palpi) = labial palps.
However, the angle of the shot often obscure the view.

K. butleri . 3rd segment of palpus short. all brown only.

K. sindu. 3rd segment short; always with an orange band.

K. rubecula ; 3rd segment long; orange band may be absent.
Malaya female.

The 3rd one is the male K rubecula cachara. dark form.
You can just make out the right palpus 3rd segment. It is very narrow but appears short because of the top down view.
Some pix of K. butleri on the net are actually K. rubecula male.
Eg. the 2nd pix below looks incorrect as the palpi are long & narrow.

PS. It is actually very difficult to judge the shape of the palpi n pix. A helpful point is K. butleri has a purple plum suffusion giving it a richer brown look.

There are a lot of confusion in the genus Koruthaialos.

de Niceville described Astictopterus butleri from Sikkim in 1884.
However he erroneously attribute females fro Cachar with ferruginous spots as butleri.
http://archive.org/stream/journalofasi521883unse#page/98/mode/1up

Evan repeated this in his book (1928/32) although he later described the taxon cachara.

Swinhoe described Arunena nigerrima from Assam in 1919.
In the genus heading he clearly state the 3rd joint of the palpi is 'minute'.
http://archive.org/stream/annalsmagazineof931919lond#page/317/mode/1up.
A nigerrima falls a synonym of K. butleri.

K. butleri .
1. Palpi 3rd segment short conical.
2. Brown with a purple plum suffusion.
3. Underside forewing with the dorsum(lower margin) are broadly pinkish grey.

These examples shows the 1. plum colour & 2, the short palpi 3rd segment.

K. rubecula.
1. Palpi 3rd segment long & narrow.
2. Dull brown without a plum purple bloom.
3. Underside FW without any pale area.

This example shows the long & narrow palpi 3rd segment & the duller brown colour.
