Glad to see you back in action, Fed!

Yes, as far as possible I am still in action in HK but the weather has not been kind or favorable for us to shoot.
Anyway, I still prefer to post in the forum - so much easier for us to track, compare and learn from each other.
For me, I learnt from the BC Forum but not from shots posted in FB!
Let's keep BC forum alive - for us and for the next generations of butterfly photographers and enthusiasts.

Although Suastus minutus aditia is not recorded in HK, the whitish shading & ill-defined spots indicate it is this species.
This pair matches C&P4 plate 54/58 very well.

The degree of white shading & the size of the spots are very variable.
An example of S. minutus aditia Thailand.

Thanks Dr Seow for highlighting the possible distinguishing differences between S. minutus and S. gremius
Here are two more shots (same individual) flitting around at the same location as the mating pair - it has a tendency to open its wings once it perched.

These two species can be very confusing sometimes.

The markings are so variable that they seem to overlaps sometime.

Typically male gremius have 3 subapical spots & female two; cellspots variable in both sexes.
HW underside typically three prominent spots in space 1b, 2, & 3.
http://butterflycircle.blogspot.my/2014/08/life-history-of-palm-bob.html

S. minutus have 2 subapical spots or less.cellspots variable.
HW underside may be white shaded; 2 prominent spots in space 1b & 2, spot 3 being absent or vestigial.
http://wingscales.com/content/record/569-1-44077.jpg

http://www.samuibutterflies.com/02_images/linkbuttons/butterflies/hesperidae/suastusminutusaditia.jpg

So there is a strong suggestion this S. minutus aditia.
However, the spots have a pale ring & this is only seen in S. gremius.

It appears this is a localised colony of S. gremius with small & reduced spots.

31, 32, & 34. Telicota bambusae horisha.
In the past T. ancilla encompass two discontinuous populations in continental Asia & Australia.
The Asian population are now separated as T. bambusae from the Australian T. ancilla.

SSp horisha in south China & Taiwan is particularly confusing. It has long veinstripes & a yellow patch at the base of space 2 and so closely resembles T. colon.

T. bambusae horisha. male brand is straight.

T. bambusa bambusae.

T. colon :male brand is slightly curved & placed near the inner edgw of the black space.
N. Vietnam
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sWauvTp53ZQ/Vi6i06KJ3ZI/AAAAAAAAHIc/V-1xa3nKyM0/s1600/51.jpg

T. besta : spots without veinstripes & brand placed near inner edge as in T. colon.
HK.

33. Parnara bada.
According to Chiba & Eliot , P. ganga lacks HW spot 6 so it can not be P. ganga.
It can not be P. guttata as the HW spots in guttata are very distinctive.

38. as Y. imitans. The very similar Y. watsoni does not occur in HK.

56. Neptis clinia is right. FW cellend triangular spot long-pointed. HW with a tiny white spot at the base of space 3 which forms the lower margin of the band. This is similar to N. hylas 57 which have a larger white spot.

71 a & b. Likely P. confucius male. FW(pic 2) without an orange patch at the base of space 2.

It has been stated P. pava male in Taiwan has the base of space 2 (FW) with a patch of orange (much as in T besta male).
Malayan P. pava also have this (see C&P4) so that this should be the case in SE Asia.

P. pava FW space 2 base with an orange patch; also seen on the underside.
Underside bands marked with black dashes, poor in dsf.
HW spot 6 relatively large (ie as largec as spot 7)

P. confucius; FW without an orange patch at base of space 2.
Degree of FW spots 4 & 5 overlap variable.
HW spot 6 small but may be large in the female.
Underside black more extensive ,& some as rounded spots.

Borbo cinnara.

Pseudoborbo bevani. Some experts disagree with needing to erect a different genus.
FW spots neater & smaller; spot 1b poor or obsolete; subapical spots more aligned.
Antennae with a more prominent pale area behind the black clubs.
HW is more rounded but impossible to judge in fieldshots.

Borbo cinnara
FW spots larger & irregular; spot 1b always prominent; subapical spots with spot 6 (lowest) typically well out of alignment.
Antennal shafts appearing mostly dark ,without a pale area behind the clubs (except at a certain angle a bit of paleness is visible).
HW more prominently lobed at the tornus but not noticeable at rest.

Butterfly activities in Hong Kong this year (2018) was rather low in the past 3 - 4 months. However, we have started to see improvement in the last two weeks. I will post some of the shots here in batches.

101: Sinthusa nasaka- not sure if this is a different subspecies from that of SG!

102: Caltoris cahira - Need confirmation!

103: Cyrestis thyodamas chinensis - at last I got a better shot of the underside.

The Sinthusa is an undescribed ssp of nasaka. See: https://www.biosch.hku.hk/ecology/porcupine/por34/34-invert2.htm . Both sexes are quite dimorphic on both surfaces

Post 43.

It is probable there are many more unrecorded species of butterflies in HK.

102. The strongly bowed FW, dark antennae suggest Baoris.
This appear to be correct for Baoris penincillata chapmani or sometimes elevated to Baoris chapmani.
There is reduction in FW spots. Here only two subapicals ( spot 6 & 7) are present. Spots 4 & 5 are absent.
The nos. of spots present are very variable.
http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/media_images/2015/97_5950-790-553e1779ae1f0-2.jpg

106. This has no spots on the HW & no FW subapical spots.
Although it has some resemblance to P. bevani it is not it.
P. bevani have small FW spots , UnH spots & antennae with pale areas.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8468/8141467426_20efa00688_h.jpg

Caltoris can sometimes have reduced spotting &the UnH is unspotted.
This matches the description of Caltoris tenuis which Evans described as having greenish yellow hair on the body & similar scales on the UnH.

Note this has some resemblance to Caltoris philippina which have sharper FWs & an ochreous green scaling on the underside.
Caltoris philippina is unknown from the whole of the Indochinese region ie Thailand, Cambodia, Laos & Vietnam.
It has a peculiar distribution, ie S. India, Sri Lanka, Malaya & eastwards to the Philippines, Sulawesi , PNG & the Solomons, missing the larger Sunda islands.
Singapore examples.

Correction.

112. Tagiades litigiosa.
There are two tiny white spots in space 2 & 3.
T. litigiosa can have both spots or only the upper spot 3.
In wsf the HW marginal spots can form a continuous band.
HW does not have a spot in space 1b .
Valid example from N. Vietnam.
Female (dsf) with FW spots in space 2 & 3.
Male (partial wsf) with only spot 3 (faint)
http://butterfliesvietnam.blogspot.com/2016/05/178-tagiades-litigiosa-water-snow-flat.html

HK Full wsf with only FW spot 3.
https://www.jungledragon.com/image/67098/water_snow_flat_-_tagiades_litigiosa.html

T. menaka is said to have only one variable form.
FW with only spot 3, no spot 2.
HW with a diffuse spot in space 1b inside the marginal spots.
https://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/sites/default/files/1461_67831-549-5f639496c1f2b-1.jpg

This one from Hk is misID'ed. Should be T. latigiosa .FW only spot 3; HW no spot in space 1b inside the marginal one.

PS. If I am not mistaken T. litigiosa is now correctly T. vajuna.
