Male Polyura athamas ( or Charaxes athamas.)

The male of P. alphius agraria have two subapical spots.

The males of both arja & athamas can be quite similar as ID is based largely on the upperside colour, greenish white in arja & pale yellow green in athamas.

The typical arja has a broad band , the outer margin is parallel to the termen. A line drawn upwards will incorporate most of the large discal spot within it. The discal spot also tends to be rectangular.
The wingshape is less sharp & the termen less concave.
However the band varies & narrow band forms resembles athamas closely except in colour & wingshape.

The band in athamas also varies but never as broad as in arja.
The FW is sharper & more angulate & the termen is strongly excavated (concave).
The outer margin of the FW band which follows the termen cut inwards & a drawn line upwards tend to exclude most of the discal spot.
The discal spot is usually quadrate or rounded.

Two examples in the link below are probably arja.

The individual here shows all the characters of P. athamas ,including a strong yellow tinge to the band.

DNA studies indicate all Polyura are merely a species group in Charaxes with 2 close relatives in Africa under Charaxes.
However, there does not seem to be a consensus yet.

TL Seow :Cheers.
