Setting up a thread now for a species Antonio and I came across on our recent trip which, we both feel, deserves a thread of its own.

We'll keep you guessing for a while, but please keep your guesses to yourselves, do not post them here!

Yes, an exciting find, still no time to post-produce the shots, but we got both male and female.

Just a little suspense and I hope we'll get a guess-winner :bsmile:

I think Antonio and I have posted all our photos of the 'lesser' species.

Now is time to reveal the species. This thread is dedicated to all our friends in and from Singapore. The only butterfly whose species name is named after your City State, and a subspecies I never thought I would ever see (the 10 leech species!).

We can not state the exact location of the find as there are 'lurkers' who search the net for very rare species/subspecies with the aim of collecting them or paying someone else to do so, save to say that it was in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. We hope to find further colonies on future trips which would alleviate the necessity for this secrecy.

We would like to introduce you to...........

The Lion Jezebel (Delias singhapura singhapura)

1) Male underside
2) Female upperside (she is apparently saying "not tonight dear, I have a headache".)
3) Female underside

Thanks, Fed. Even I should be able to get 1 or 2 decent shots out of the 200+ I took of the species!:grin2:

If the habitat where we found it is any indication to the species' needs, then, no, I do not think you will be able to find it on Singapore anymore, though I do not believe Wallace made a mistake when describing the Type locality as Singapore. The Island has simply changed too much for the species (pers. comment).

Thank you, all for your congratulations. This tops the list, for me, of the rare butts I have seen, and I do seem to have had a lot of luck in the past in this respect.
