Recently I was back to Taiwan with Ellen for a one week break and this time round I make it a point to
allocate more time to search for the flying jewels of Taiwan. After doing a thorough search through the net
to source for shooting location and through various correspondence with Flickr and Facebook friends from
Taiwan, I managed to gather enough information on the popular sites for butterfly sighting.

Although Nov is not the prime time to visit the country for Butterflies as the weather is starting to turn cold
in central and northern parts of Taiwan, which we will be going, we continue to go ahead to take advantage of
airfare promotion as well as to suit our schedule.

Let’s start off with a few foody pictures.

A quick fire snack of wild boar meat with the right mix of fats and meat.

Fantastic, Nelson. Great to see these photos from Taiwan. I really liked the two Ixias shots, a lovely pierid. The Papilio hermosanus was also very nice. The colour of the Symbrenthia lilaea formosanus seemed really different to the congeners in Malaysia.

Wow, Sephisa is a gorgeous genus. I don't remember seeing pics of those before. Loved the Timelaea as well.

Your shots, as usual, were superb.

I agree with all comments. Superb pictures of fascinating butts and locations.

I was not expecting so much from you from this trip owing to the time of year. Wrong!!!!:grin2: . My geography was dramatically off, I had thought Taiwan was much further north, but I see part of the island is still within the tropics. It looks as if it can provide interest all year round.

Yep, those were my favorites too and they are on my target list for this trip as I have been monitoring what the locals are shooting at this time of the year. Yep, the Timelaea and the male Sephisa are feeding on a dead snake carcass.

Thanks David, the species that you can find in Taiwan are rather interesting and unique, especially the Lycaenidae. Will definitely return to look for them. :)

Thanks Les, from what I have gather, the southern part of Taiwan is warm for most part of the year and you could find butterflies all year round in the south. The North can be quite cold during year end and there will not be as much activities. The central part of taiwan used to be a butterfly heaven where butterflies amass in numbers due to its geographical landscape but in recent times, the population has also dwindled. According to the locals, the central part of Taiwan is still a prime place for butterflies.:)
