Jamides sp. This is the species that has always being mistaken as Sky Blue at the Base Camp at Panti forest. If needed be will try to provide dorsal view.

[Psyche]

1. Jamides of the celeno group, eg celeno, pura, & zebra.
An upper is needed. Extended orange just variation.

2. Salanoemia sala.

3. Pirdana distanti. Note yellow tornal cilia & body.

Sunny, there are only two Jamides species which have uppersides as deep blue as the Sky Blue ( J. caeruleus.)
Both also have a larger orange patch than usual.

J. virgulatus can be ruled out immediately as its forewing postdiscal band is broken & uneven.

This leaves Jamides malaccanus malaccanus which have a straight forewing postdiscal band.
This species usually have all the white striae well-aligned, but there are examples in which the lower striae near the orange patch are out of alignment.
This one also suffer from a slight misalignment of the 4th stria higher up.

No need of upperside for confirmation.

Perhaps it is just me , often I became lost in the exchanges and cross-references in identification, and gave up following this vital process.

This is my feeble attempt to summarise this particular simple ID process, so that readers can easily follow and understand how a species put up for identification was derived at.

Granted this simple example does not reflect some very difficult ones that involved multiple posts and exchanges that are very tedious , but isn't it the more reason for it to be understood ?

Please do comment and suggest how we can be better the ID process.
