View Full Version : Sulawesi - Minahasa Highlands

The main thread has, as Sunny said, got rather messy.

This thread is open only for our photos from the Highlands. For information, the Gardenia residence where we stayed was in Tondano, alt. c800m, just south of Manado. We were partly taken up a mountain, and those photos from outside our residence would have been taken at just over 1000m.

... looking forward to the pics!

Les, how was the area for birds? Sulawesi was high on my list when I was an avid twitcher. There are many endemics on the island and the name "Minahasa" makes me think of one of the owls.

Two cropped photos of a pair of Delias zebuda, showing clearly the differences betwee the male (white upperside, cleaner underside) and the female.

Better individual photos should, hopefully follow.

We saw two out of the three Delias species to be found in the north, the only one missing was D. melusina, unfortunately.

Unfortunately they were too high up in the canopy and you can only see them in flight. :-(

These Delias were really a challenge to shoot. They were constantly flirting from flower to flower while they are actively feeding in the evening.

Lovely shots Nelson, bearing in mid how uncooperative they were.:mad2: My shots were terrible, but it was wonderful for me to see these species in the wild for the first time! Shame we could not find the Delias melusina, but that is the rarest of the 3 species from the north of the island.

No comments on all your id.

I was wondering whether this butterfly was prepared to land on the flower and uncoil his proboscis and prepare to feed or he just finishing his meal and in the process to recoil it probosics at the same time leaving the flower?
What a beautiful behavioural shot!

Many thanks again for your help, Mr Teo.

You are welcome, Nelson.

I just wanted to confirm my id (E. hypermnestra) with some one who carried out extensive collection and studied butterflies on SEA islands, because Vane-Wright & R. de Jong (2003) have not listed this species in their publication, and D' Abrera (1985) mentioned the distribution of E. hypermnestra throughout the Oriental region except Philippines and Sulawesi subregion. I carefully look at your photo it does'n't fit into any species listed by Vane-Wright & R. de Jong as well as D' Abrera. it has the typical features (wing shape, venation, underside colour and pattern) of E. hypermnestra. May be this species migrated to Sulawesi after the Project Wallace to Dumoga-Bone National Park.

I went to Bantimurung, Makassar in May 2012 and didn't get to see these beautiful butterflies shown here. A guide brought us to his private hunting ground and we saw P. hypolitus, Great Orange Tip, Golden Birdwing, Royal Assyrian and others. He caught them easily, 9 out of 10 tries.
