Dr Laurence Kirton is working on a small guidebook for a London-based publisher, Beaufoy Publishing. The book is one of a series of books under the "A Naturalist's Guide". This book is for the Butterflies of Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Dr Kirton is looking for photos of the following species and has approached me for help to get the photos for this book. The only "payment" that the publisher can give contributors, would be a copy of the book for each photo accepted for publication.

Please send thumbnail shots (no more than 100kb - same size as the shots we post here on BC forums) to my email at khewsk@hotmail.com. Please put the filename as the species in the list below. I will work with Dr Kirton to select the photos. Note that I will try to ensure that every member of BC who submits the photos gets a minimum of 1 photo published in the book.

A sample cover of the book is shown below. The book is scheduled for publication by the end of this year.

For those who have started sending me your shots, thanks! Keep 'em coming. I'll make sure that everyone gets a chance with your photos so that you can get your copies of the book. I'll request Dr Kirton the autograph the books for everyone. :)

Thanks to those of you who have contributed your photos. I have created a private Flickr album that is accessed by Dr Kirton and the publisher's layout artist so that he can select those photos that he needs. I have put in most of your photos without any pre-selection. Those of you who have submitted, please put your preferred email address here so that you can be 'invited' to that private folder that Dr Kirton refers to (and also if Dr Kirton needs more information from you on your shot)

The following have contributed :

Chng CK
Benjamin Yam
Nelson Ong
Tan Keyang
Brian Goh
Loke PF
The selection process will continue towards the next few months before Dr Kirton finalises the text for his book. As mentioned, you will get a copy of the book for each photo that is selected and eventually used in the book.

LC Goh and Les Day : I understand that Dr Kirton is contacting you guys directly for your additional shots of Malaysian and Thai butterflies which are not contributed by our members here.

If anyone else wants to contribute your photos, please feel free to do so. Any contribution is purely on a voluntary basis. :)

Thanks, Fed. But Dr Kirton doesn't have the time to search for photos in any blog or website. That's why I had to set up the Flickr account for him to choose easily. If you want to contribute, you can select, say a dozen of your best shots and just email to me in a folder.

Ok, Dr Kirton has selected the photos that many of you have contributed, and has given me the list. There are more needed, and I will help him select from what we have from this forum as well as our checklist. He will contact LC Goh separately for those Malaysian butts that are missing. For the Thai butts, he may contact Les separately too. Please send your shots in the following format :

1300 pixels wide at 300 dpi. This will correspond to the book's maximum picture width format of about 105mm wide by 70mm height. DO NOT overcrop your shots such that there is little space around the butt. If you do, some of your pictures may end up with the butt getting cut off during the layout process, and the shot may have to be re-selected from others.

Save in TIFF (JPEG is ok, but TIFF is preferred). Do not put in any watermarks and or copyright text on your photos. Such photos will be discarded. For the Photoshop users, you may save in either 8-bit or 16-bit (preferred) format in RGB mode.

I will post the email address of the person to send to on this thread later.

Naming convention : Speciesname_Photographer e.g. Papiliodemoleus_SunnyChir. Please stop at species name only, as Dr Kirton will avoid using the subspecies name at the moment due to the cross-border book (Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore)

As agreed with the publishers, they will give you a complimentary copy of the book for each photo that has been selected. :)

First Batch - Publisher said that this is still tentative and not guaranteed for the final book output but will most likely be selected unless the layout artist has some problems with the shots

Khew ,

Sending as email attachments might burst the file attachment limit.

Perhaps use the free file transfer service like https://www.wetransfer.com/ (https://www.wetransfer.com/#). which has 2 GB limit would be more hassle free .

Cheers!

Ok. I'll wait for the lady over in the UK to decide what she wants. We can also send in batches, cos I don't think the 1300 pixel JPG files are extremely big. The other alternative is also to use Dropbox, which is also like a "cloud" server.

This is the reply from the publisher's project manager for the book. So for those of you who have already done your post-processing, please send the files to her directly.

Her name is Rosemary Wilkinson, and her email is rjwmail@btinternet.com

Thanks.

Best wishes

I have been in communications with Dr Kirton, and he has given me a list of the shots that he’s selected. I have approached the photographers and asked them to prepare their shots in 1300 pixel wide at 300dpi format. At this resolution the shots should correspond with your 105mm format. The shots will also be saved in either JPG or TIF formats.

May I request the photographers to send their shots (probably a few in each email) directly to your email?

Let me know if you require some other arrangement.

Regards.

My file is 188 Mbs for 25 photos and the picture are just in 8 bits and not the 16 bits Tiff format she desired. Each picture is averaging 7.5 Mbs .

If I were to send them in 10mbs batches I will need to send her some 20 + emails !

There is no doubt that she can receive but it is not her receiving that is the problem .....it is the senders that will have problem .

Well, we can always try , but no guaranteed that it will go through and if it cannot go through the senders at times are none the wiser. .... have fun with the hundreds of emails that will be heading her way for the hundred of species the book contains. :)

Cheers !

I am sending to her as a Skydrive attachment and she can download them at her own time .... I am not sitting here waiting and sending 20+ emails.

I told her if she has problem with this approach let me know ..... I can always send her one email a day with 0ne to two photos attached to each over the next 20+ day.

Cheers!

This is to update everyone that the book is now in its final production stage and will be ready in about 6-8 weeks' time. The book will be launched by the publisher here in Singapore on 24 Apr 2014 at Gardens by the Bay. Dr Kirton will be here to autograph your copies. Note that each photographer will receive a single complimentary copy of the book. I believe Dr Kirton clarified that with you when he requested photos from each of you.

The book is expected to be retailed at a price of S$24.90.

Do take note of the date 24 Apr 2014. The launch is likely to start at 4:30pm.

At first I thought my email client has problem ..... hanged in the sent box ,did not leave the launch pad ! :)

Then I called the number as per invitation mail a couple of times ,there wasn't anyone answering it , so l left a message behind.

For those of you on their mailing list, you should have received the details and a reminder about the book launch tomorrow. The distributor told me that they will only be bringing 100 copies of the book to be sold at the launch price of S$20. Otherwise, the book is already on sale at our major bookstores at S$24.95.

So if you intend to get more copies for friends or for yourselves, do get the books quick before their stocks run out.

All photo contributors will get at least a copy of the book. Those who have contributed more than 10 shots will get additional copies of the book.

See you at the launch tomorrow! :)
