Hi, I shot this quite sometime back last year at USR.
The middle portion looks like a "butterfly", but it can't be one:hmmm: Or is it knitted that way to attract prey? the shape looks quite symmetrical as well.:hmmm:

EC,

Very interesting and intricate weave, sometimes it does make one wonder the purpose of weaving such an artwork. It must has its purpose. In nature , all the critters do things for a purpose.

Thanks for sharing!

They are called stabilimenta and have no apparent function, though they probably fluoresce in the uv range to attract prey.
Their shape is unique to the species, gender and age of the spider. :)

Thanks, Aaron. Sounds interesting :)
Any idea which species of spider it belongs to. I recalled waiting for almost an hour for the spider to appear after spotting it but no sight of it.

I suspect a Neogea nocticolor may be the owner of this web.

Take a look at Loke's shot here (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9768) and Bobby's shot here (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6098&highlight=nocticolor)
