Greetings,
I have just returned from a trip to Malaysia with three friends from the States. This was their first visit to southeast Asia so I was their "guide" who helped them find birds and other animals. All of the guys are retired biologists who worked for the US government.

Our itinerary included Taman Negara, Mt. Kinabalu/Poring/Rafflesia Centre in Sabah, Kubah and Permai in Sarawak, Kuala Selangor and finally Fraser's Hill. We had a wonderful time and saw a good variety of animals. The entire trip proceeded smoothly and we had no problems at all with the internet bookings.

This will be the first of a number of posts. I decided to begin with Fraser's Hill since I've heard rumours that some of you may be heading that way before long. The weather at Fraser's was mixed this year with a couple of nice, sunny days but also a couple of cool, wet days that were not good for most animals. Butterfly diversity and density was much lower this year than last July.

Here are a few shots of Fraser's Hill and the surrounding habitat. This area is one of my favourite sites in Malaysia and is always a fun place to visit. My friends loved the large and colourful birds found on the hill. We did not encounter anything unusual but had good looks at Red-headed Trogons, Fire-tufted Barbets, Long-tailed Broadbill, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Silver-eared Mesia, Verditer Flycatcher, Hill Blue Flycatchers, Blue Nuthatches, Black-and-Crimson Orioles and many others.

Ted's photo of the clock tower.

This is Ted's photo of the Pekan Bunglo where we stayed. The owners are the same but they changed management companies. Now, there is someone at reception everyday and they have an excellent cook on site. Of course, the cost has gone up since last July.

Typical habitat along the Telekom Loop road:

Jeriau Falls area, a great place to photograph puddling butterflies:

There was a nice lookout about halfway down the new road to the Gap. We stopped there for birding but I also put out shrimp paste bait. This attracted some interesting species on our second visit (a sunny day).

I also visited a couple of sites along the road towards Raub. The first site was roughly 4km from the bottom of the new road and at 750m elevation.

The second site was about 8km from the bottom of the new road and at 515m elevation. This was the site where I photographed a Constable last year.

Ted and I searched for reptiles. Most were found by driving on the roads at night. A few lizards and a single snake were also found during the day.

I think that the following was a juvenile Water Monitor (Varanus salvator). One was attracted to the belachan bait below Jeriau Falls. It scared off the butterflies that I was trying to photograph.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/moloch05/Malaysia/Frasers%20Hill/Mar2012%20800/monitor.jpg

Green-crested Dragon (Bronchocela cristatella). Digiscoped by Bruce through his binoculars. Bruce found the dragon at the Gap. It had captured a dragonfly. The second shot shows the habitat and the dragon (visible in photo centre).

We found this Green Cat Snake (Boiga cyanea) on the road between the Gap and Kuala Kubu Bharu. It is one of the rear-fanged colubrids with mild venom.

Blue Malaysian Coral Snake (Calliophis bivirgatus). Unfortunately, this beautiful elapid was dead on the road. This one was below the Gap but Ted also found one on the day that I left near Jelai Guesthouse. I think that these highly toxic elapids are one of the most beautiful species of snakes.

Beautiful series of shots, David. I keep on saying that I must go to Fraser's Hill soon, but, somehow, something else always comes up!

Interesting that you found moths in good supply this year. Personally, on Samui, there has been absolutely not activity at all, this year. We hardly saw ant at Khao Sok either. By the way, do you need IDs for the moths?

1) This is NOT the Atlas Moth, Attacus atlas, but a relative, Archaeoattacus edwardsii.

4) Urapteroides astheniata - Uraniidae

Thanks, Khew. I enjoy looking at the posts of the BC outings to Fraser's Hill. Someday, it would be fun to meet up with the group at that lovely location.

Hmmm, the trilobite beetle could actually be a firefly larva or female.:)

Hello Aaron,
You could be right but it is a little confusing to me. Here is a link that shows the two but even here it is tricky. The conspicuous head on the one from Fraser's seems to me to more resemble what was identified as a trilobite.

Here is another shot of a Duliticola, a member of Lycidae:

What do you think? If the above links are accurate, I tend to think Lycidae rather than Lampyridae but I could be wrong.

Thanks, Sunny, for the photo and links.

Looks like the "trilobite" from FH was really a Lampyrid. The one that Kurt photographed and others that I will be posting soon from Mt. Kinabalu were the "real" trilobites.

Strange how these beetles are so similar. Do you know if Lycids also can have the phosphorescent spots or is that a family characteristic of the Lampyrids?

David
