Following the wave, an with a month of delay, because of my work, I'm going to start a thread about my photo exits on my island. February here on the island is a month a little stingy about butterflies, but this is a start!

Nice shots, Antonio. Now to look for the Chain Swordtail (Pathysa aristeus), however you will only have a short window of opportunity, as it only has a single brood each year, and will have disappeared by the end of April!

David, the five Pansies we have, Chocolate, Gray, Peacock, Lemon and Blue, are all common throughout Thailand, except montane areas. The one species missing from these Islands is the Yellow Pansy (Junonia hierta), which is odd, as it is common on the mainland.

The Lemon Pansy seems to be more common in the northern part of Malaysia, although I believe they've been spotted as far south as KL once in a while. They are common at times at the Penang Botanic Gardens. When I shot this one (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4702) some time back, there were at least half a dozen of them frolicking in the sunshine, in the same behaviour as their other relatives - chasing each other in a spiralling dogfight.

We also encountered them on our earlier trip to Langkawi, so it would suggest that the species is common in the northern part of Malaysia. Now we wait patiently for them to slowly move southwards towards Singapore. :)

The Prosotas looks like P. pia because of the blurry submarginal markings, but thankfully this male have its forewing raised up high.
In P. pia the band below the central cell spot/band is reduced & narrow.

So this is correctly P. nora male.
I think in pia at least the submarginal spots on the hindwing should be rather vague & washedout.

I am wondering what you meant by only a single brood a year, since this will be quite extraordinary for a tropical species.

I gather the species is migratory, the butterflies settled in a area to lay their eggs. The progeny of these migrants after they emerged then fly to another area and repeat the process.

Pathysa aristeus is wide-ranging, from India to Australia, but strangely enough is restricted to the far north of Malaya. Perhaps its favoured hostplant is one that only thrives in a strongly seasonal climate.

Glorious photo of this wonderfully hairy species. It must have just eclosed, I have never seen one with such ochraceous colouring, mine all seem to be much greyer unfortunately. I even had to do a quick check to make sure it was not C. subochrea, which it isn't, and it is a northern Thai species.

Not common here, but still seen on a quite regular basis.

There is a faint slatey wash to the ground colour, giving a better contrast of the markings.(Difference from A. ariana & elopura dama.)

Arhopala atosia & lurida can be quite difficult to separate.
A. lurida is darker with better contrasted markings.

Perhaps this feaure is correct after all.
In A. lurida the hindwing postdiscal spots 4 & 5 (just to the outside of the cellend bar) have a wide overlap.
http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArhopalaLuridaMUpUnAC1.jpg

In A. atosia postdiscal spot 4 & 5 are staggered & have little overlap.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArhopalaAtosiaAtosiaMFUpUnAC1.jpg

This holds true in C&P4 plate 65/ 14 & 15.
It also holds true in Fleming's images of these 2 species.

Les, you did ask about this a long while back but at that time I thought it was a variable feature.

Thus this should be Arhopala lurida.

TL Seow:cheers:
PS. An example of the local race A. atosia malayana showing postdiscal spots 4 & 5 staggered with no overlap.

I think your Sunbeams are C. santana as all examples of C. bulis bulis from Thailand have the forewing dark line continued on the hindwing as a 2nd inner dark line to the tornus.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/lyc3/84030001.html

In C. santana this inner line/band is absent or broken & dislocated.

Sorry, Antonio, but I slept on this one and am now having certain doubts.

The upperside markings appear inbetween the two species, showing certain aspects of both. There is certainly a larger orange patch on the hindwing than I would normally expect on C. bulis, but the forewing markings are closer to C. bulis.

These 2 species can be difficult even with upperside.
This post 79 male should be C. bulis.

The forewing have a smaller orange patch as in bulis.
The ID key states to note the orange in space 7 which is not visible.
Space 6 (just below the left forewing) has a longer orange patch than usual.
(Addendum: Below the right forewing part of hindwing space 7 can be seen & the basal half is black.)

The hindwing cell have just a sliver of orange at the cellend, & the base is mostly dark.
This one matched the 1994 Than To, Yala male in Yutaka's website.
http://yutaka.it-n.jp/lyc3/84030001.html

It would be interesting to see the underside of this male.

The post 75 underside is C. santana. The long palpi 3rd segments indicate it is a female & its markings are orange.
Here is a male C. santana. Note its shorter palpi.

Les had shown me 2 valid examples of male C. bulis from Samui.

The underside is practically identical to that of C. santana, without an inner dark line on the hindwing (one with a faint dislocated one).
The only difference I can see is that the forewing line/band is more zigzag or sawtoothed especially at the top, instead of scalloped.

This also raise the question of the presence of C. bulis in Singapore.
While it is true no 'white' female had been seen, it is also true that no female of C. santana has been shot before, indicating the rarity of this sex.
This is unlike C. saronis where the female had been shot many times.

I guess this is where Horace can come in and help. The only way to gather more data is to breed and keep specimens of C. santana for reference, esp the females, so that we have more evidence of how the females look like. Horace has a shot of the female that he bred earlier on our blog article here (http://butterflycircle.blogspot.sg/2011/06/life-history-of-malayan-sunbeam.html)

Interesting, you have a male Curetis.
The forewing resembles C. bulis, but the hindwing does not.
The hindwing's orange cover almost the whole wing.
Below the left forewing the exposed part of space 7 is black (ended by the arching vein 7 arising from the radius (upperarm) of the cell & forming the upper border of space 6.)

I am fairly certain it is C. sperthis.
The upperside of C. sperthis is variable resembling bulis or santana, but space 7 is wholly blackened.(Correction: Key states only costa (upper margin) is black though whole of space 7 may be blackened.
The underside have black dots & the forewing band is less slanted to the termen.

TL Seow:cheers:
PS. After looking at this for sometimes I think you are right. It is C. bulis male.
Even at its minimum the forewing orange patch of sperthis is like santana, ie larger & closer to the termen.
Wear had caused the black on the hindwing to fade to brown giving the impression that the hindwing is mostly orange.

Those shots are terrific. You capture colour so well. Are these photos with the Canon 7D or 5Dii? With the Sigma 150mm? The colour and sharpness are certainly better than most of my photos.

Thanks, David and Williams, for the nice words.

I'm back using the 7D, because with the 5Dii (new) I have focus issues (slow autofocus, weak and imprecise with low light, maybe a problem of back/front focus with my preferred lens).

The lens is always the Sigma 150/2.8 with OS (stabilization), a very good and sharp glass, although very heavy (I cannot think about the weight of the new Sigma 180 OS!)

Very basic post-production with Acdsee Pro (crop, level, de-noise and sharpening)

The Purlisa!!! Oh Bravo!!!!!!. What altitude were you at, as I have only found it on the hilltops?

Unless I am mistaken, your odd Arhopala is A. alaconia media. I came across this species for the first time, myself, only last Tuesday, and could only take an awful photo, which I could not show on this particular forum.

Thanks, Les, it has been a real emotion to see the Purlisa flying in front of me and lucky enough to get a few shots before it flies away.

I got the GPS with me and I was not over 130 mt sl, the 2 small mountain around the site are 380 and 520 meters.

Thanks very much for the altitude info, very interesting. It is an absolute stunner, isn't it.

You have had a very, very good last few days! (I've updated the 'Islands List' I'm keeping)

Yes, I found a nice location, extensive and still a bit wild, and the weather sunny, with a few showers the last days help the finds.

Today too a +1 for KPG, probably the best

That certainly is A. alaconia with the odd anvil-shaped spot 6 & 7.
Great find on this and the Purlisa, Antonio.

Thank you, Aaron, I was yesterday again there, but without any luck ( I cannot pretend to find every time something new or rare....

The forum is a bit sleepy, so I post the only two remarkable species I've found:

The Centaur Oakblue (http://www.flickr.com/photos/angiud/8014443054/)

But after tomorrow Les will come to visit me and I hope to bring him to this location and to find a lot of good species (for sure the Grand Imperial, so common there)

This area seems like a good spot for hilltopping lycaenids.:)

Also, could the common earl be a Euthalia sp.?

Purlisa may still be extant in Singapore, quietly hilltopping in Bukit Timah.

In space 7 (which is just below the forewing) the black basal portion is more than half the length.

You have better luck than me at the moment. I have not been able to take a single photo since my return from Khao Sok! Despite going out each of the last 3 days, the only thing worth seeing was a very distant and inaccessible female Curetis bulis (Bright Sunbeam).

Koh Phangan is a bit empty too, but I start to see a few Arhopalas, Delias, Papilio and many secondary or grass species. So I hope the situation will improve shortly! I miss Khao Sok!

Thank you Brian!
