It looks like I have shot the zigzag dart before!?

Look at this old thread : http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9691&highlight=Blue+jay

If it is mingo, that means it has existed all this while and not just in CCA or Ubin!

What you had then is the Chinese or Confucian Dart ( Potanthus confucius ).

Compare the pic with the Zigzag Banded Dart you have.

Look at the outer margins of the subapical spots on the forewing and the outer margin of the hindwing band.
P. mingo is more zigzag on the hindwing.
Here is an example of the Chinese Dart from HK or Taiwan.

Sorry!

I did not realize it was that different.
Thank you Uncle Seow for the speedy correction! :grin2:

P. conficius is one of the 'new' potanthus sp that were overlooked or not studied before right? Seems that these little skippers need more documentation!

Yup, that's what a few of us are doing in the background, and until we have a verifiable set of voucher specimens (mating pairs are the best) and organise them side-by-side for Seow, TeoTP and Dr Kirton to scrutinise in detail, we are not recording them on the checklist yet.

The high variability between specimens and also male/female, coupled with lighting conditions in the field, colours, condition of specimen, etc., makes it hard to ID with just a couple of field shots.

So please hold your horses on the IDs till we establish beyond any doubt that the species are what we believe they are. :) Just keep shooting and posting so that Seow can help us narrow down the possibilities by elimination and we have a large enough database of records to convince any nay-sayers out there.

Without too much unnecessary explanation which have been given in the other threads, this is P. trachala. Note little overlap & deep indented margins.

Thank you Uncle Seow!

It looks like the detached dart was here all along!:grin2:
