I was looking through some old shots when I bumped into this file named " dark brand bb". It was old and shot in JPEG so has a lot of colour noise.

Obviously I doubt my own ID skills so I looked it up in the book.

And I noticed that ALL the pictures in the book of ALL the mycalesis have at least one sguiggly line on the hindwing. Exept for the dingy bb. Hovever, I got myself into further confusion when I saw that the key feature of the dingy bb is that the eye in space 2 of the hindwing is moved inwards.

So is this a dingy bb or a dark brand bb? :hmmm:

I don't usually give English lessons, but as you are still at school, please note the word is DOUBT.

Far more importantly, I can not help you with the Mycalesis sp. I hate them.!!

Jonathan, this should be a Dark Brand BB. The Dingy has the first big occeli from the hindwing bottom moved out of line. How to diffrentiate the Dark and Long: Most of the Dark Brands have a solid, thicker white line than the Long Brand. This may not be scientific enough but this is generaly how I diffrentiate them.:P Actually, the butterflies(recorded in Singapore) in the Mycalesis genus are not hard to ID. Just need to observe and study and it will not seem as difficult as you find it.

It is DBBB.
There is no white shading in the marginal areas & only 1 dark submarginal line.(White shading & 2 dark lines in LBBB.)
Note that in all BB, on the hindwing the last two eyespots are in space 1b.
Here the upper eyespot in space 1b & that in space 2 & 3 are large and neatly in line . (typical in DBBB.)

In DBB, the eyespot in space 2 is shifted in strongly. A line through the eyespots in space 2 & 3 will usually not touch the upper eyespot in space 1b.
The forewing spots are also arranged in a curve, mirroring that on the hindwing.

This individual is very unusual in that the indentation line is shallow as in LBBB.

Thanks for the identity confirmation Brian and Uncle Seow!!:)

Now I understand the differences better and that they can be very variable!
