Even with the help of Les, I am struggling to get IDs for these two below. Any help gratefully received. Unfortunately, I do not have shots of the upperside of either butt :-(

After looking at half a dozen other Halpe species from Assam, I realsed that the key to the ID of these two lies in the antennae.

The antenna have a white dot just below the orange apiculus. In profile view it appears as a line. In this respect the 2nd skipper will be similar.
Other Halpe spp. have wholely brown antennae.

All Halpe species with white on the antennae have a band on the underside of the hindwing except three, H. insignis , H. sikkima & H. burmana. These three also have orange apiculi.

From this, pic 1 is H. insignis although the hindwing cilia is not as white as it should be, but this could be due to regional difference i.e. different subspecies or variation.

The 2nd pic, matches H. burmana best. See http://www.wsk.ac.th/5152/03science/b72.htm

Thank you Seow, these two have been annoying me for a couple of months! Also, thanks for pointing out the antennae, I need to pay more attention to them in the future.

Although I have seen H. insignis here on Samui, I have only been able to capture the upperside, and had no idea on the underside. After reading the description in Pinratana (Volume 5), I see that it matches, though, as you say, I would have expected more obvious white cilia.

As for H. burmana, it was one of 3 or 4 similar species I had considered, but I felt I could not make a definite decision.

Wow! Thank you Seow! I was giving up hope of ID on these, without upperside shots.
