Haha that's true for most. But I never did like it myself. I actually find it more convenient to surf BC on the fly when I am transiting from work and home. It's a good time to catch up on the posts and be updated. That's if I can get a seat and not sleeping haha.

Loke and CM,

What we need is a local contact with a car rental company either from Ipoh or Kampar ..............so that we can either go by long distance buses to kampar or Ipoh or fly-in to Ipoh and take a rental car and hit the trails.

All the butt hot spots are all within an hour if we operate out of Grand Kampar Hotel (http://www.grandkamparhotel.com.my/)which is fairy new and cheap and well maintained and centrally located from all the butt hot spots.

From Kampar

To Gua Tempurung 15 minutes

To Ulu Gerok 45 minutes

To Kata Kijang 45 minutes

To Kuala Woh approx 50 minutes

If you intend to drive , it will take approx. 7-8 hours to reach Kuala Woh from second link including lunch break and kopi-o breaks along the way at highway speed limit of 110km/h, , we did it in 6 hours ...... at Sunny's speed !!;P

Your first 2 skippers are
Contiguous Swift P. lubricans (from hindwing colour and spots )
& Small Branded Swift P. mathias( likewise ).

The 3rd is interesting but too dark to make out if the hindwing is evenly ochreous. We'll just have to assumed it is P. mathias.

This can only be Ragadia annulata since it is not R. makuta umbrata, the only other possibility.

You have an interesting skipper from Cameron Highland which is very similar to Sunny's Zela storeyi pics.
The prominent diffuse cell-end bars/spots & a faint upper cellspot indicatees it is Zela zeus optimus.

Seow, I think the label was wrong. Chee Ming shot that particular species at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park (USR) this morning.

Seow, I think the label was wrong. Chee Ming shot that particular species at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park (USR) this morning.

I thought so too, which was why I came back to make a query.

It is probably also Zela storeyi.

There are just 2 things wrong with it.
1. The spot is too big.
2. The diffuse cel-end bars on both wings are prominent which is not the case with Z. storeyi.

TL Seow:cheers:
PS. I did a rechecking by comparing Sunny's, Khew's, the paper by Dr. Kirton/Eliot and this pic.

1. The faint cellspot is probably an artefact.
2. The white spot is larger than in all the others, but probably possible.
3. The diffuse cell-end bars (the one on the forewing is just above the white spot) are harder to explain away.
It is not present in Sunny's pic & hardly in Khew's pic. In the revised paper, the bar is faint on the hindwing and absent on the forewing.
Only 2 species have the hindwing bar prominent Z. zeus & xenon.
So there is some definite doubt this is Z. storeyi.

I must agree with Seow in that there is a definite doubt as to this being Z. storeyi. I attach a photo of Z. zeus optima and, to my mind, the end cell markings match this far more closely. I have no photo of Z. xenon, so I can not express any opinion on that species.

Great, you have a nice shot of Z. zeus optima.
The small spot in space 6 may be missing or very faint (as seen in your pic).
Althugh ssp optima is found mainly in north Malaya, there is no reason it can not be found farther south.
This could also be a variation of ssp zeus.

I don't think this can be Z. zenon(spelling error in my previous post) as the large spot is quite quadrate in shape. In zenon this is suposed to be more rectangular.
Z. zenon is so rare in Malaya that only one specimen is known, caught by Fleming perhaps half a century ago.

TL Seow:cheers:

Psyche

Zela elioti is also a possibility as it can also have that yellowish cell-end mark on the hindwing though not so prominent.
More importantly, its forewing do not have the small white spot in space 6 that is usually seen in Zela zeus.

Thanks Seow and les for the discussion on the skipper. I did not know what I shot and asked Federick what this is when I bump into him. It did not give me a second chance to photography it.

Lets hope someone will chance upon it again.
The Zela skippers are so rare in Singapore that the record for Z. storeyi lies in Khew's and Sunny's hands, while the record for Z. cowani(forewing without spot) is a single male back in 1939.
Your shot looks likely to be a new species.

The last 3 pics are quite interesting as it is a male Malayan 5-ring and 2 female Common 5-ring & shows the startling contrast in appearance.

Antonio, it is a walk around lens, Canon 24-105. Sharp is because of the small web size and some sharpening during the PP in my usual automated process, perhaps. Lolz.
