I have been in communications with Pisuth Ek-Amnuay, and will be ordering his 2nd edition from him when it is launched soon. (Probably in Feb or Mar)

Please add your name to the list if you are keen. I am not sure of the actual price yet, as he is yet to announce it, but from the earlier order (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5659&highlight=ek-amnuay&page=3)that we got for the 1st edition, it was S$88 for the book, plus postage and packing.

So I would expect it to be around that price, if not slightly more.

Here's a teaser of how the book looks like. :)

Just as a matter of interest, the two top butterflies on the cover of the book are very rare swallowtails which are protected by CITES. The left one is called the Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii) and the right one is called the Kaiser (Teinopalpus imperialis).

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d3/Bhutanitis_lidderdale.jpg

Amusingly, the Kaiser has also earned the nickname of the "Motorbike Butterfly" in Thailand. :grin2: Not that it flies around like a bike or makes any loud sounds, but because they are so highly-sought after by collectors, any villager in Chiangmai lucky enough to catch one will earn enough money to buy a motorcycle!

I need to search for the hostplant and eggs.... think BIG. :bsmile:

I have seen video of the terrain there, from kid's recent 5 days mountain biking trip there. Lots of uphill and downhill.

A better idea will be to win the Motorbike first then use it to look for hostplant and eggs in Doi Inthanon...... it is a big area you know!!!:bsmile:

and don't forget warm clothing:

The park covers an area of 48,240 ha. Its lowlands below 800 meters in elevation are warm and very dry during the rain-free season, but the summit of Doi Inthanon, at 2565 meters, has a climate more like Canada than Thailand. The temperature has been known to drop as low as -8 degrees C. and frosts are not unusual during the cool, dry season. January is the coldest month: an average nighttime temperature is 5.5 degrees C.

The latest info is that publication of the second edition will be some time in October, so it should be available for your trip. Best way to contact Pisuth is to go to the website www.malaeng.com (http://www.malaeng.com) and email him through 'contact us'. It will be possible to get from bookshops, but will be cheaper direct:) .

Where are you going, as I am considering a trip up north around that time, as Islanditis will have set in by then, and its our monsoon season on Samui!

Thx for the info. I am not quite sure, where I will be going. We are travelling with a child of 17-18 months, so it has to be easy sites :-).

We will be sometime in Bkk to visit the grandparents, I will then go out alone for 7-10 days and then the small family will travel. Itinerary will include Chiang Dao (family), possibly Doi Inthanon (family) and probably Sam Roi Yot (family). My trip alone could be to Khao Soi Dao, which long has been a target of mine.

Hi Jan Fischer,

By the time you will be in Thailand the book should be ready for selling. We do hope to.

Hopefully we can have it begining of November. While we have a big flood coming closer to Bangkok. Amarin Book is on the west side of Bangkok where the flood is surrounding too.

The water is still rising in Bangkok, although the rains up north have finished, or nearly so. The trouble is that the river waters flowing south are meeting the abnormally high tides moving north from the Gulf of Thailand. It will take about 6 weeks, or so we are being told, for the waters to subside. It all depends on where Amarin Press is located.

Pisuth took a couple of weeks to reply to me on another matter (Horaga albimacula), he has a lot on his plate at the moment. I am sure he will post the publication on his website when it finally happens. I check that site daily and will report it here. We just need to be patient.

Whilst the rains of the North are finishing, they have just started here, and, as I write this, there is a huge thunderstorm outside that has been going on for a couple of hours now. My Canoe is all prepared, again! (Do you have a smilie with an umbrella?:grin2: )

Thanks for the update, Antonio. The last time we bought his 1st edition (which was no lightweight either!), we ordered 12 copies, and the courier price wasn't too bad, as long as there is a bulk order. If we order copy by copy, then the postage will be high.

I'll write to Pisuth to find out if he is able to send the books to me like the last time. :)

Ok, since Pisuth has confirmed that the 2nd edition will now be available towards the last week of this month, I have written to him to indicate that we will be bulk purchasing the books. As an indicative cost, we purchased the 1st edition some time back at a cost of S$88 per copy, inclusive of postage. I believe the cost should be around that amount, perhaps slightly more this time. Whatever it is, please reconfirm your order, so that I can confirm the bulk purchase with Pisuth.

For those of you residing in Thailand, I suggest that you order it directly from Pisuth, as it should be cheaper. No point sending it to Singapore and then we send it back to Thailand! ;P

I got my copy today, thanks to the kindness of Dr. Pisuth, here in Chiang Mai. The book is massive and extremely useful for us interested in Thai butts. Printing maybe not at his best, images a bit dark sometimes, but this is one of the first copies printed. A huge mass of interesting information and images.

Order closed. I will proceed to order from Pisuth. At the moment, he has run out of the first batch of books, and we'll have to wait a bit more before he sends to me. :)

I visited Siam Insect Zoo last Wednesday and was able to get a copy finally - Yabadabbadooo :-D

And now I made my first ID from it, though I am only 95% sure, could it be hybrida instead of brama?

No! I was there on Tuesday and in CM until the 19th. We would be able to meet and maybe go hunting together...

It is even more silly. I was there Wednesday AND Monday. Tuesday I opted to stay i Tha Ton to look for Jerdon's Bushchat (I am a birder too), which I did NOT see. I was, however, somewhat mollified by finding a River Lapwing instead.

What did you see up there? I did not see many butterflies actually, on Monday it was raining, so almost none at all. Wednesday the weather was sunny most of the time, but still not many butterflies around. The Heliophorus on the pic was the most seen species (maybe 10 seen).

Wow... :omg: the upperside of this species is spectacular!

The second photo confirms it as Heliophorus brahma mogoka which has the very apt English name of The Golden Sapphire.

And, yes, SK, it is beautiful with the light in the right direction, the female less so.

Thx Les! The two first are the same individual, while the 3rd is another, so in theory, there could be more than one species involved, but I am pretty sure they were all the same. In BoT, 2 ed. brahma is noted from Doi Pha Hom Phok which is continuous with Doi Lang, while hybrida is noted from "Chiang Mai", so it is certainly expected that brahma should be there :)

Latest update. The books have arrived in Singapore! They are now held at customs pending payment of GST and tax. :prrr: The tax amount adds up to nearly S$6 per book. :prrr: :prrr:

I'll arrange with you guys to collect your books either this weekend or the next.

My own estimate would be S$78 per copy, incl bank commission fees in making payment to Pisuth. Cheaper than the amount that we paid for the first book.

For those who have received your copy, you may wish to note that Pisuth has kindly autographed each of the books (on the black page, so the signature may not be too obvious).

So your copy has "added value" with the author's signature. :)

Not sure about those sites, but you can either order direct from the author in Thailand, or try the US-based sites if you are keen. The entomology site BioQuip is selling it at US$89.55. http://www.bioquip.com/specials/book_special.asp

I suggest you go to the Thai website and order from them if you are interested in the book. I believe the postage to India will be lower than from the US. Price on the Thai website is 2,750 Baht (or S$109.31)

Is it possible to make butterfly books such as this and the new caterpillar book available at Oh's Farm so buyers can just pick them up there?

Commander
06-Dec-2012, 09:18 AM
The new caterpillar book is available at most good book stores in Singapore. It's published by NParks, so they are responsible for the distribution of the books.

As for this Thai book, it will depend on the distributors here in Singapore. It would appear that they think that there's no demand for the book.
