The first one looks like a Common Nawab indeed, but the colour balance seems a bit out after your post-processing.

The 2nd one, if my memory serves me correctly, looks like a Singleton (Una usta). I don't have C&P4 with me, so can someone please check and see.

Nice shots, Jonathan.

Your memory is good, Khew. It sure looks like photos of Una usta on the web.

My C&P4 refers me to plate 21 for the illustration of the Singleton. That plate contains nymphalids. :hmmm:

Yah, every time I use CS5, the colour seems to change.

Jonathan,

I am assuming you are shooting in RAW.

Perhaps these two posts might be relevant to your saturated color.

1 Camera Raw setting. (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=15347&stc=1&d=1290540993)

2 Red Bias (http://www.butterflycircle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10580)

Refer to the Adobe Raw Convertor (ARC) in (1), under Basic setting the default of the last setting Saturation at zero is too saturated . I found that I have to select to minus 15 and some ""Fill Light "" to get a more natural color.

After you are through with the selection it can be saved as the ""New Camera Raw Default "" under the pull-down manual on the upper right.

Hope these helps.

Besides, how do you get that page? ( I am new to CS5 )

Jonathan ,

Read up on the advantage of using Raw.

Bridge is the interface of PS in processing Raw file , it could either be open independently or from PS as marked in the attachment.

Have fun!

Um, my camera has two RAW options : RAW+large or RAW. ( normal ) Which should I use?

Jonathan, use RAW. Raw + Large is when u want both copies, raw and jpeg, which will take up precious space in your CF/SD card.

RAW

RAW+large gives two files on your memory card, one as a raw, and the other as a jpg.

Jonathan: It's unclear if you have a Nikon F3 which has two bays for CF cards and thus allows you to shoot RAW and another file format (typically TIFF or JPG/large) or some other system.

I typically shoot both when I'm using my F3. RAW files are much larger (usually 15 GB) than the jpg files (4-6 GB) and so the RAW file CF card could fill up (I've done that once) and images are then saved only as Large JPGs. With my D700 I shoot only one CF card and shoot in RAW format... which is a typical choice for most DSLRs.

Ideally, you should strive to shoot perfect images each and every time. In that case you really wouldn't need to shoot in a RAW format since every shot would be perfect. That would save you a lot of processing time on the computer after each shoot.

I have been shooting professionally for about 28 years now and had 10+ years before that as a good amateur. I shoot RAW. I process RAW. Why, I have not yet mastered the art of perfect exposure... even though I teach how to achieve proper exposure. In the "heat of the shoot" it is easy to go wrong somewhere. Using a RAW format allows you to make adjustments in post-processing with a larger margin for correcting errors. Suppose you forgot to change your White Balance setting from sunlight to shade. That would mean that most of your images would have a slightly "off' tinge. In RAW processing the solution is simple: use a slider to adjust the Kelvin scale to the right setting. Simple. The same holds true for other features in the programs that handle RAW files. Once done you save the images as TIFFS or JPGS and the RAW files are there as backups. I have saved a lot of images that once I discarded because RAW format allows for such latitude in recovering or perfecting images.

The BC members you are in touch with are seasoned masters of both photography and post processing. You'll quickly learn the subtleties of fine photography by watching the postings of the different members.

Until then, learn as much as you can about the RAW format. It will be worth your while.
