Thanks to John picking me up from the Sha Tin MTR and showing me around Fong Yuen ( Butterfly Garden) near Taipo.

Weather was kind and there were a fair number of Butterflies and loads of Butterfly Photographers , there must be at least 30 photogs on Sunday 5th Sept 2010.

Not a single Purple Sapphire sighted but plenty of White DragonTails in the garden, but shooting them is a big problem asthey stay high , except one that obliged by sunbathing at eye-level.:) Attempts to locate their puddling ground were unfruitful.

Sharing some of the shots below , all identification and name were made with reference to the newly released Encyclopedia Of Hong Kong Butterflies ( Butterfly Identification) published by Hong Kong Lepidopterists Society .

It is a pity that the Identification keys are in Chinese , it might pose a problem for those who are not versed in Chinese.

Swee leh Sunny! Well composed shots, and you've managed to get all of them with a nice clean background. I must go shoot at Fong Yuen next time if I ever visit HK again.

The colour of the thorax of Burmese Bush Blue is rather unique.

Uncle Sunny, Nice series from you. You're so lucky that the Dragontail stop for you, I don't have such luck when I was there. Must go back again to get it ;P

Thanks guys !

Weekend is not the time to go , the number of Butterfly Photogs I encountered there at Fong Yuen is more than 3 times the active members of BC, moreover a number of volunteers are in , weeding and up-keeping the garden during weekends.:)

Looks like I either have to head for Cameron Highland or back to Hong Kong again when they are in season!!:mad2:

Score : Purple Sapphire 2 Sunny 0.:bsmile:

The Encyclopedia of Hong Kong Butterflies ( Butterfly Identification ) was published on 5th July 2010.

It contains 1200 shots of the 249 species of Hong Kong Butterflies, close to 1/3 of the 277 page book is dedicated to identification keys of the various species.

As I mentioned earlier the ID keys are annotated in Chinese , it is well worth the cost of HK$98 especially if you are versed in Chinese.

I only managed to get one copy , it appears that they are low on inventory at Fong Yuen.

Nice shots, Sunny. Looks like a good trip.

Dragon Tails always look so odd to me. I always find it hard to think of them as swallowtails. They look much more like some of the long-tailed skippers to me.
