Greetings,

I was amazed by the number of Lycaenids at Taman Negara. When I examined the websites, it seems that many of these are very similar so I am not certain of their identities. I would appreciate help if you recognize them.

Thanks,
David

The 2rd and 3rd (male) look correct to me.

Lovely photos of the upperside of the Banded Blue Pierrot (Discolampa ethion thalimar). I have not managed a single shot of the upperside in 3 1/2 years of trying, and it is common up here!

Thanks very much for the correction, Yong San and Les.

Do you know who maintains the ButterflyCircle checklist? I don't see this species included in the ButterflyCircle photos but it is present on LC Goh's website.

Here are more that I would like to have checked.

Yamfly (Loxura atymnus)? Seen a few times in the gardens of Mutiara Resort.

Dark Posy (Drupadia theda)? -- I never saw the underwings.

Long-banded Silverline (Spindasis lohita) -- how does this species differ from S. syama? These were common on flowering lantana at the edge of the Mutiara Resort.

Caerulean (Jamides sp.)? -- forest interior

Leaf Blue (Amblypodia anita)? I saw this once behind the chalets at Mutiara Resort. ... or is this one of the many Arphola?

Red Flash (Rapala iarbus) -- only once right on the lawn of the Mutiara Resort.

ButterflyCircle's checklist is currently for Singapore's butterflies only. Our checklist designer, Anthony is in the process of creating one for a wider list to include the Malaysian species.

That last series on the Common Red Flash. The 3rd shot isn't of the same individual, right? That one looks more like a Narrow Spark (Sinthusa nasaka amba)

Khew,
You are correct that the third individual was a different butterfly. Thanks for the identification.

The Amblypodia species looks like a male. Did you happen to see the upperside? If it was bright blue with broad black borders, then it would be A. narada. if purple with narrow borders, then A. anita. The undersides are very similar, though A. narada is larger if one has the chance to compare the two.

Definitely not an Arhopala.

David, the Dark Posy upperside matches what I've shot here in Singapore. It's a male.

The key to differentiating the Long Banded and Club Silverlines lie in the basal streak on the underside of the forewing. However, there are other species in Malaysia, and I would not be totally sure about the ID.

If you come this way often, I suggest that you get a copy of Corbet & Pendlebury's Butterflies of the Malay Peninsula Edition 4. Though it's been revised some time in 1992 by Col Eliot and almost 20 years old already, it's still the definitive book for butterflies in Malaysia and Singapore.

There is also a supplementary article in the Malaysian Nature Journal which updates some of the information (Malaysian Nature Journal 59(1), pp 1 - 49, 2008) in C&P4, authored by Dr Laurence Kirton and Col Eliot.

Thanks, guys.

Les,
Based on your info, I think the Amblypodea must have been A. anita since I remember purple wings and I can't recall a broad black border. It reminded me a little of some of the large Arhopala here in tropical Australia.

Thanks, Khew, for the identifications and info. I will look to see if I can find an online seller. I would like to own a copy of the text.

David
