Talking [070405-0407] HongKong (Lantau / Kadoorie / FungYuen)

070405 -- while enroute to the Wisdom Path, saw a Common Hedge Blue landed on the tree. Was using a 24mm f/1.8 but the COLD weather actually cause the butterfly to be extreme inactive.

070406 -- Visited Kadoorie Farm (KFBG). There is a bus stop right in front of the farm. The weather was cold. As we hiked up the butterfly garden, the temperature drop further. Only manage to encounter a handful of species. Cabbage White was the main dominant species during the time (or probably due to the fact that it is a farmland?). The butterfly garden was located quite a distance from the entrance. Did not visit the summit as the weather was too cold for any chance to encounter butterflies. There were also several nature walk which was shortcut between locations -- unfortunately, some were closed. A trek pole is strongly recommended.

070407 -- Visit to FungYuen (FY). Geoffrey was there to bring us around. Currently, Fung Yuen is working on Phase 2 expansion (including a feeding ground for the White Dragontail). Geoffrey also brought us to Phase 3 which is a sloped ground intended for planting fruit tree over the next decade. As it was a cloudy and cool day, many butterflies landed with open wing (including Plum Judy). Still have visible butterfly activities -- except the Paplioinae was kinda of missing except for Common Mormon & Red Helen.

    Hi Rustic,

Sorry the cold weather spoilt the butterfly watching @ KFBG. It was one of the coldest starts to April I can remember.

Things have markedly improved in the last week - moth recording on the 14th included several Actias selene (Moon Moth) and an Attacus atlas (Atlas Moth). Many more butterflies evident by day (up to 29°C today and butterflies everywhere).

    cheers,

    Roger.
