    Default ID Review from Meghalaya

Dear Dr. Seow sir, I have tried IDed the following butterflies. Please weather they are correct or wrong.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Tentative ID: Mycalesis visala?

    FW spot 2 large
    white striae strongly enhanced?
Inner margins of ocelli looks to form a rather shallow indentation in the upper half.

    Doubts: Mycalesis intermedia.

    2. Tentative ID: Nacaduba pactolus

The shape of HW submarginal spot 6 & the rest of the submarginal spots forming a narrow regular band below.

    3. Tentative ID: Mycalesis intermedia?

FW spot 2 looks large ;white striae moderately enhanced.
Inner margins of ocelli forms a shallow / deep (cannot decide the degree of indentation) indentation in the upper half.

Therefore Doubts: Mycalesis visala. Also UnF white post-discal line looks more extensive.

    4. Mycalesis francisca?

    5. Have no clue on this Celaenorrhinus. But spottings does not match C. leucocera & C. nigicans.

    Hw is also unmarked.

    1. Probably correct as Mycalesis visala. Correction: M. visala.

Mycalesis in India can be very difficult with multiple forms & varieties.
Some are upgraded to full species.
To complicate matters the same species look different in India & in P. Malaysia or Singapore.
    Comparing becomes less useful.
The enhancement of the white striaes may also be very variable in each species.

Five similar species are found in your area.

    M. perseus.
FW spot 2 about 1 1/2 of HW spot 8.
FW spots may be arranged in an arc/semicircle.
HW with a deep wide indentation with rounded apex.
HW lower 4 spots out of line ie spots 2 & 3 not aligned with twin spots in space 1b.

    M. visala visala.
White striae enhanced, thicker. FW spot 2 large 3X HW spot 6; FW spot 2 yellow ring relatively broad.
HW with a wide 'V' indentation, apex blunt.
HW lower 4 spots slightly out of line.
Dark discal line usually present w2ith single tooth.

    Mycalesis intermedia.
    White striae modrately enhanced,
FW spot 2 3X HW spot 6. Yellow ring of spot 2 very thin.
HW with indentation with straighter margins & sharper apex.
HW lower 4 spots slightly out of line.
    Dark discal line obscure.

    Mycalesis mineus mineus.
    White striae little enhanced.
FW spot 2 about 2X HW spot 6.

    2 is correctly Nacaduba pactolus.

HW spot 6 squarish with thE rest of the submarginal spots flattened as a band is distinctive.

4 is correct as Mycalesis francisca.

HW spot 3 is relatively large ,often almost as large as spot 6.
Discal band curved in slightly at costa & tornus.

    M. gotama ;HW spot 3 is small even obsolete some times.
Discal bands are relatively straight at costa & HW tornus.

    5 is Celaenorrhinus nigricans.

The HW can be seen to be narrowly chequered white.
In C. nigricans, the FW band reaches the costa much wider than other species.
Whether the band is nearer the apex is very difficult to judge in a photo.
Here, the left side (right FW ) band is nearer apex, on the left side (right FW) it is midway.
