Default Chiang Mai trip (7 -12 October 2019)

    Dear Dr Seow,

Its amazing to know there are so many different species of the Polyura species in Thailand. The Jewel and Great Nawabs are quite easy to identify but was quite unsure for the rest posted herein. Could you please help me to confirm if I have identified them correctly.

    1. Jewel Nawab (Polyura Delphis)

    2. Common Nawab (Polyura Athamas)

    3.Great Nawab (Polyura Eudamippus)

    4. Pallid Nawab (Polyura Aria)

    5. Indian Yellow Nawab (Polyura Jalysus)

    Regards

They are all correct except 4 should be P. athamas as well.

    P. athamas & arja can be confusingly similar.
Both have broad or narrow bands, but typically broader in P. arja.

The main difference is colour. P. arja being white or greenish on the upperside & P. athamas yellow or yellow green.

    P. athamas ;band more often narrow. FW distal margin strongly excavated with a distinct angle at vein 2, FW cellspot often two (variable).
Underside band more strongly tinged yellow.

    P. arja ;Upperside distinctly white or greenish white ;FW distal margin straighter. cellspot often one (variable).
Underside band greenish white, may slightly yellow tinged; often wide & subapical spot rectangular.
