    Dear Dr Seow, please help ID this Rapala shot at USR on 17 June. Thanks in advance!

    Rapala dieneces female.

    Three Rapala species which are closedly related are very similar & confusing in the past.
    Their underside colouration varies greatly, & becomes very confusing as few uppersides are ever taken.


    Rapala dieneces. Underside colour variable.
    FW band usually quite straight but may also be moderately curved towards the costa.
    HW orange crown prominent often extending into the adjacent spaces .

    Rapala suffusa. Underside coulur dull pale ochreous to deep chrome.
    FW band strongly bent or curved in towards the costa.
    HW orange crown not noticeable, being yellow & blending into the ground colour.

    Rapala damona; Underside deep ochreous/orangey brown in male, much paler in the female.
    FW band curved in near the costa.
    HW orange crown confined to space 2 around the black spot, not prominent in the male ; in female better defined.

    A 4th species of this group R. cowani ,in which the underside is grey is found on Pulau Ubin.
