Photographed at Doi Phu Kha, n Thailand. Spent considerable time on this one, but not able to find anything like it. Thoressa or Sovia would seem the closest.
Request help please.
The unmarked HW & pale area on the antenna indicate Caltoris.
There are two FW cellspots & the underside HW is rather dark brown.
This rule out species without cellspots ie plebeia, malaya, tulsi, kumara, philippina, .
Of the followig with cellspots (one or two), thye following can be eliminated. C. cormasa ;UnHW deep red brown. C. brunnea ;FW with a brand' HWUn dark purple brown. C. bromus :HWUn. overlaid with ochreous scales. C. sirius sirius; FW usually with a spot 1b. Evans state of ssp sirius UnHW chocolate : Eliot state of ssp fusca UnHW ochreous. C. tenuis : Greenish yellow hair & UnHW with greenish yellow scales. C. aurociliata ; cilia of both wings bright yellow.
2. C. confusa. Evans states this is darker (than bromus) usually with reduced markings particularly in the absence of the upper cellspot & the spot in space 3 (spot 3)(Possibly Evans meant spot 4)
Since this is fully spotted it is probably Caltoris cahira austeni.Correction: FW spot 4 is absent.
TL Seow: CHeers.
PS. This seem more likely to be Caltoris confusa.
1. The spot in space 4 (spot 4) is missing. Upper FW cellspot very small.
2. The underside is not uniformly dark brown as in C. cahira.
Many thanks for the detailed reply and especially the link to the detailed paper - very useful.
As usual with these skippers it's important to first be able to identify the genus.
Something that certainly takes time to learn from experience.
