Some lymantriines. Most of the lymantriine pictures I have are unidentified, here are those from my last trip, one caterpillar, 3 Orgyiini, 1 Nygmiini and one Arctornis sp.:

The larva is not from the north (unlike all the others) but from bangkok, where it lived in a Lotus pot happily munching the leaves of the Lotus:

    Hi Seow

Thx again for your help. The first two, I am very convinced that you have nailed with your usual eloquence. The third one, on the other hand... I remember it as very small, it has reddish-brownish legs, that I do not see in any of the pics of Ilema vaneeckei, which seems to be a Sundaland species not recorded from Thailand, and this record is from extreme Northern Thailand. Are you sure?

    best wishes

    It was a tentative ID.
Since you have the book I thought you might check on it.
It looks too much like Orgyia with the usual markings enhanced with white.

Since there are only a few species there it might even be O. postica itself.

As for the others, I am afraid, no match found.

    TL Seow: Cheers.
PS. Do you know of a species called Orgyia albofasciata. Schintlmeister 1989, TL Thailand.
albofasciata means marked with white fascias (bands or lines) & would seem to fit this one nicely.

I know . There is, however, no book on the Lymantriinae in Thailand. I have the volumes 2-6 of MoT (vol. 1 about the Saturniidae is sold out) - but there is no Lymantriinae volume yet, and as far as I no know, no plan for one .

Sorry I am a bit confused by your answer, the O. postica ID for no. 3, I certainly believe - it is the Ilema vaneeckei for no. 2 that I have difficulty with.

I a aware that it is difficult stuff with no really good resources available for Lymantriinae in Thailand, so I am very grateful for all the help you have given me.

    best wishes

PS. I would say a high probability.

However it does not seem to match any species.
But I believed this is Orgyia osseata.

As stated in the text it is very variable & may have red or grey zones.
It is closest to the example of male no. 4 below.

Wow - you solved many of them, thx a lot.

The last one I also thought was probably an Orgyia, but had no luck in finding anything similar. A very variable species such as O. osseata may well be the answer.

Regarding the Arctornis I agree that the wing pattern seem very similar or identical to A. cygna (named for being white a a swan?), but some pictures of cygna does not seem to have the rufous hair on the head, the rufufous tinge to antenna and legs, that mine has. This one from Taiwan for instance which also has distinct black spots on the legs, that mine does not. Do you think it could be individual variation or is either mine or the Taiwanese something else?

    best wishes and thx again
