In the 19th century, in Great Britain, when people would see Butterflies flutter-by their Dairy Products (cream, butter, rich milk etc.), those folks thought that the Butterflies were really Fairies who had come to steal the goodies. So they called the insects 'Butterflies'.

I read about this in one of my Butterfly Books.

Thanks Sister Sophie for the info. I was also suspecting that it has something to do with butter.
