Dear Dr Seow,

Could you please help to ID these butterflies taken in Singapore. I struggle to tell them apart.

It is useful to ID whether male or female .
Male- sharper wings ;abdomial end blunt. Female -elongate shape abdominal end with a lower notch.

1. male Cephrenes acalle. very strong black veins all over; band may be poor.

2. Probbaly female Telicota augias; Overall more evenly orange colour ; veins lightly darkened.

Female T. besta is very similar; duller ,yellower .somewhat uneven. veins lightly dark-dusted.

Female T. linna ;yellower & veins on HW not dark-dusted.

Female T. colon. yellower ;Fw spots 3, 4, & 5 staggered outwards & often distorted.

3. male Pelopidas agna.
4. very worn probably female P. agna.

P. agna ;UnHW evenly brown without smudges or pale (grey actually) shadings in the marginal areas.

Thanks for the assistance. Is the male Cephrenes acalle in pic. 1 an aberrant? The markings on the underside of the wings are missing.

Yes, the male C. acalle would be considered an aberration.
It does happen also with the other orange genera eg. Telicota & Potanthus.

The marginal areas which correspond to the blue areas below is pale-shaded in P. mathias.

No problem. Female Polytremis lubricans.

Unlike Pelopidas ,Polytremis have no HW cellspot in the centre. HW spot 4 is typically elongate.

The Conjoined Swift Pelopidas conjunctus is easily confused with.
Note it has a central cellspot on the HW; spots are white on the HW & yellow on the FW.
